Item Automatic English phoneme recognition from articulatory data generated by EPG systems with grid and anatomical layout of contact sensors(Australasian Speech Science and Technology Association Inc., 2019-08-22) Krynicki, Grzegorz; Dziubalska-Kołaczyk, Katarzyna; Weckwerth, Jarosław; Michalski, Grzegorz; Kaźmierski, Kamil; Maciejewska, Barbara; Wiskirska-Woźnica, Bożena; Żygis, Marzena; Kuczko, Wiesław; Sekuła, AlicjaThe aim of the study was to conduct automatic phoneme identification from articulatory data that accompanied the production of these phonemes in continuous speech. The articulatory data were obtained from 2 electropalatographic systems, Palatometer by Complete Speech and Linguagraph by Rose-Medical. Palatometer was used with the artificial palate containing 124 contact sensors in a grid layout, including 2 sensors monitoring the lip contact. The palate included a vacuum-thermoformed flexible printed circuit. Linguagraph was used with the acrylic artificial palate designed and developed for the purpose of this study, containing 62 electrodes in anatomical layout. Palatometer was used by one native of General American and Linguagraph by one native of General British, each reading 140 phonetically balanced sentences that included Harvard Sentences and TIMIT prompts. The EPG data were parametrised into dimensionality reduction indexes, which were analysed by means of linear discriminant analysis and a probabilistic neural network. The results of classifications are discussed.Item Kierunki zaangażowania Jana Korneckiego w prace zjednoczeniowe polskich towarzystw oświatowych w latach 1923-1935(Wydawnictwo Naukowe UAM, 2018) Michalski, GrzegorzAfter Poland regained independence in 1918, educational societies played an important role in the education of the society. Jan Kornecki was one of many community workers who continued activities in that area started during the times of national bondage. On behalf of the Polish Educational Society in Warsaw [Polska Macierz Szkolna], he became a member of a pioneer group trying to unify the actions and strengthen the cooperation between educational societies in various districts of Poland. After the establishment of the Liaison Commission of Polish Educational Societies [Komisja Porozumiewawcza Polskich Towarzystw Oświatowych], he accepted the position of the secretary of the Commission’s Executive Department and was responsible for initiating and maintaining permanent contacts between the societies forming the Commission. Apart from maintaining ongoing relationships with community workers in the places of their local activities, he prepared the First Polish Educational Congress, which was convened in December 1924 in Warsaw. J. Kornecki rendered great services in founding a new educational organization named The Union of Polish Educational Societies [Zjednoczenie Polskich Towarzystw Oświatowych], which was established in 1927 based on the experiences gathered by the Liaison Commission, which operated earlieroku He took the function of the manager of the Union’s Executive Department Office; his responsibilities included delegating and supervising tasks performed by clerks employed in the Office, managing the property and funds, and drawing up reports of activities. He moreover organized and convened annual and extraordinary meetings of delegates and implemented the resolutions adopted, prepared plans and programmes of quarterly off-schedule meetings of the Executive Department, represented the Union during external relations, mainly with state and local government institutions and first of all initiated and maintained regular relationships with separate associations and provided them with all kinds of aid, e.g. by organizing annual conferences for educational managers.Item REPRESENTATIONAL HANDLING OF POZNAŃ-CRACOW VOICING IN GOVERNMENT PHONOLOGY(Versita Ltd., de Gruyter, 2008) Michalski, GrzegorzThis article discusses the problem of accounting for Poznań-Cracow voicing in Government Phonology. It is concluded that in order for the process to be handled representationally, Polish words beginning with non-obstruents would need to carry the element {L} as part of the melody at the leftmost skeletal slot. It is explained that although such a move would make a representa- tional analysis of Poznań-Cracow Voicing straightforward, the presence of the element {L} on non-obstruents is against the tenets of the phonological model. The article is organised as follows. Section 1 presents a selection of voice phenomena in Pol- ish. Section 2 introduces the basic concepts of Government Phonology relevant to the analysis. Section 3 summarises Gussmann’s (2007) analysis of voice phenomena in Polish. Section 4 dis- cusses the differences between Warsaw Polish and Poznań-Cracow Polish in terms of voice as- similation. Section 5 briefly summarises two earlier analyses of voice phenomena in Polish that account for Poznań-Cracow Voicing, namely Gussmann’s (1992) SPE-type analysis of SEGMENT- TO-CONSONANT SPREADING, and Rubach’s (1996) Lexical Phonology (LP) analysis of CRACOW SPREAD. Section 6 presents theoretical considerations of why these two analyses cannot be me- chanically translated into GP theoretical machinery. The section also points to the limitations of VOICE ADJUSTMENT with respect to Poznań-Cracow Voicing. Section 7 introduces the flawed idea of enriching the left edge of words with the element {L}, and provides an attempt at a repre- sentational analysis of Poznań-Cracow Voicing using the enriched representation. Section 8 dis- cusses the limitations of the analysis, and proposes an alternative approach to the issue. Section 9 summarises the most important conclusions.
