Item A duch jego był napięty jak łuk(Wydawnictwo Naukowe Uniwersytetu im. Adama Mickiewicza, 2008) Stankiewicz, LucynaThe author of this article discusses particular fields of activity of Appius Claudius the Blind, the first individualised figure in Latin literature. This citizen of Rome who lived at the turn of the 4th and 3rd century B.C. became famous as an outstanding politician, reformer and orator.Item Theognidea (księga druga) – próba określenia gatunku(Wydawnictwo Naukowe Uniwersytetu im. Adama Mickiewicza, 2008) Szczot, MonikaThe subject of the article is to identify and name types of lyrical poetry present in Corpus Theognideum. The direct lyrical poetry presented in this series focuses on confessions of the lyrical ‘I’, whose monologue adopts the form of an open confession addressed to a reader. This “dialogue opening” to a reader is, however, only a formal sign, a pretext demonstrating the emotional approach of the lyrical “I” to the world. The entire text is initiated by the lyrical expressions of the lyrical “I” and focuses on the speaker himself and his feelings.Item Perypetie z leksyką Septuaginty(Wydawnictwo Naukowe Uniwersytetu im. Adama Mickiewicza, 2008) Popowski, RemigiuszThe Septuagint is a translation of Hebrew books of the Old Testament by Hellenised Jews in the area of Egypt (Alexandria) from ca. 250 till the end of the 2nd century B.C. It also contains several books in Greek and its text went through several revisions. The most valuable manuscripts of the Septuagint are Codex Vaticanus, Codex Sinaiticus and Codex Alexandrinus (4th and 5th centuries AD). Its edition with the New Testament was published in Venice by Aldus Manutius' press in 1518 but then the carefully prepared in Spain in six volumes Biblia Complutensis was awaiting Papal approval for a year. Apart from the Hebrew, Aramaic, Latin (Vulgate) versions it also contained the Greek version of the Septuagint. The frst Greek dictionary for the Septuagint was compiled by J.C. Biel in 1732–1740 (printed in the Hague, 1779–1780). J.F. Schleusner based on it (Leipzig 1784–1786) as did C.G. Bretschneider (Leipzig 1805). Later there were other attempts to compile such a dictionary, but to no effect. Only at the end of the 20th century two studies appeared independent of each other. One of them was prepared by F. Rehkopf (Göttingen 1989) and the other by J. Lust, E. Eynikel, K. Hauspie (1st edition Stuttgart 1992–1996). The vocabulary of the Septuagint causes much diffculty to lexicographers. First of all, it is a vocabulary of a translation not of the original works and is used in books (within the Septuagint), translated by various authors and at different periods of time and it was submitted to changes in later studies of the text (especially of Origenes), the translators' command of both the language of the original and that of the translation differed. For these and other reasons the lexis of the Septuagint contains, among other things, transliterations of Greek words, numerous neologisms, even more numerous neosemantisms, and it is also woven into the intricate syntax which is often incomprehensible. Thus a lexicographer faces a problem whether to defne words on the basis of the Hebrew substrate or to maintain their hitherto semantics as evidenced in the Greek classical and hellenistic literature. None of the hitherto compiled Greek dictionaries of the Septuagint is a fully capable tool for its effcient translation into any modern languages.Item Duma Halikarnasa(Wydawnictwo Naukowe Uniwersytetu im. Adama Mickiewicza, 2008) Ławińska-Tyszkowska, JaninaThe paper is a trial of translation of hellenistic panegyrical epigram fund in the half of 20th century.Item Koszmar Nazona(Wydawnictwo Naukowe Uniwersytetu im. Adama Mickiewicza, 2008) Puk, MarlenaIn this article the author presents and briefy discusses a short story of Antonio Tabucchi entitled Sogno di Publio Ovidio Nasone, poeta e cortegiano, published in the collection of stories: Sogni di sogni. The novelist imagines Ovid transformed into a big butterfy coming back to Rome and describes the consequences of this metamorphosis.Item Ummidia i Minicja. Dwa konterfekty niewieście Pliniusza Młodszego (Epist. VII 24; V 16)(Wydawnictwo Naukowe Uniwersytetu im. Adama Mickiewicza, 2008) Pigoń, JakubThe paper analyses Pliny the Younger’s two descriptions of women, his letter VII 24, written after the death of the old aristocratic lady Ummidia Quadratilla, and V 16, refecting upon the premature end of a young girl, Minicia Marcella. In both these texts, the dead women play a prominent role and are given a detailed characterization (more sympathetic in the case of Minicia, more nuanced in the case of Ummidia), yet they are not the only, or even the most important, points of reference. In VII 24 it is Ummidia’s stern grandson who proves to be the letter’s main character, and his personality is revealed through the contrast with his joyful grandmother. In V 16 Pliny’s focus shifts from the girl to her father whose grief dominates the second part of the letter.Item O epigramach z „Żywotów Homera” słów kilka(Wydawnictwo Naukowe Uniwersytetu im. Adama Mickiewicza, 2008) Appel, WłodzimierzThis short article aims at drawing attention to the Gelegenheitsdichtungen (occasional poetry) which, directly or indirectly, are identifed with epigrams in the preserved texts of Homer’s life. In this context it seems interesting that Homer’s epitaph, composed and inscribed in hexameters, is elegeion not epigramma.Item Śmiech Arystofanejski. Analiza środków komicznych u Arystofanesa na przykładzie „Żab”(Wydawnictwo Naukowe Uniwersytetu im. Adama Mickiewicza, 2008) Makowski, PiotrThe text is a kind of report of reading in comic means used in one of Aristophanes’ best comedies – Frogs. The autor presents an outline of his own research method, quotes some examples of types of comic means in this play and confronts his results with important (Polish and foreign) philological works devoted to the general problem of comism in Aristophanes.Item Audiencja u cesarzowej. Komentarz do wizerunku Liwii Druzylli w Owidiuszowej poezji z Pontu(Wydawnictwo Naukowe Uniwersytetu im. Adama Mickiewicza, 2008) Wójcik, AndrzejIn the Tristia and Epistulae ex Ponto one can fnd some elegies dedicated to Livia, Augustus’ wife. The formal panegyrical tone of them cannot hide the poet’s ambiguous attitude to his great and dangeorous enemy in the emperor’s court.Item Antyk i współczesność: wokół pragmatyki tekstu antycznego (1Tm 1, 17). Z badań nad tradycją antyczną na Górnym Śląsku(Wydawnictwo Naukowe Uniwersytetu im. Adama Mickiewicza, 2008) Aleksandrowicz, TadeuszThe article presents an interpretation of the Soli Deo honor et gloria inscription from the fronton of the metropolitan cathedral of Christ the King in Katowice. The interpretation of the text depends on whether the word soli is taken as solely attributive or also as predicative. Given both the ancient and the contemporary historical and cultural contexts the former appears more plausible.Item „Gotyckie” elementy w tragediach Seneki(Wydawnictwo Naukowe Uniwersytetu im. Adama Mickiewicza, 2008) Pypłacz, JoannaIn the present article I discuss the remarkable fact that many of the motifs to be found in Seneca’s tragedies – such as a horrible death, a madman, an obsession or some supernatural agent – are also to be found in abundance in the work of “Gothic” authors such as Ann Radcliffe and Edgar Allan Poe. Indeed, these motifs are now commonly considered to be the hallmark of the Gothic genre. I also analyse some of the techniques which Seneca uses to arouse fear and stimulate the reader’s imagination, comparing them with those used by Poe and other Gothic writers.Item Semiotyka zapachów w starożytności(Wydawnictwo Naukowe Uniwersytetu im. Adama Mickiewicza, 2008) Ilski, KazimierzThe paper concerns the question, whether we can analyse the favours in the ethical respect. Another problem is whether their usage should be adequate to the persons and situation. Finally the paper touches the problem whether the fragrances or their basic components were distributed according to the social hierarchy. In such case some smells would have been excluded from the common usage as devoted strictly to the gods, kings, priests etc.Item Tekst i responsja w E. Suppl. 72-80(Wydawnictwo Naukowe Uniwersytetu im. Adama Mickiewicza, 2008) Stępień, PiotrIn this article the author argues for the correctness of the text and the irregular responsion transmitted for E. Suppl. 72-80. He discusses two commonly accepted emendations for the antistrophe, which are then showed to be unsatisfactory for contextual reasons. Analysing the text of the strophe, he presents the special use of the noun prospolos in Greek drama; this allows him to reject Heath’s emendation for the strophe. Finally the author specifes three compositional characteristics of the lyrics of Euripides’ Suppliants which make the text and the irregular responsion in question highly probable in the form in which they are transmitted by the codex unicus L.Item Motyw rozpoznania a sposób prezentacji postaci kobiecych w palliacie(Wydawnictwo Naukowe Uniwersytetu im. Adama Mickiewicza, 2008) Maciejewska, AleksandraThe article shows how the recognition infuences on the way that female characters are presented in palliata. This motif is very common in Plautus’ and Terence’s comedies. It can be said that anagnorismos enables the introduction of women on the stage and is not at variance with antique customs and decorum.Item Uwiedzenie Nemezis w Ramnus(Wydawnictwo Naukowe Uniwersytetu im. Adama Mickiewicza, 2008) Lasek, Anna MariaIn the article the author presented the circumstances of the seduction of the Goddess Nemezis by Zeus based on a preserved fragment of Kypria and the description of this event in Eratosthenes' Katasterismi.Item O zachowaniu się przy stole, czyli kodeks etyki biesiadnej w „Uczcie” Filoksenosa na tle greckiej tradycji literackiej(Wydawnictwo Naukowe Uniwersytetu im. Adama Mickiewicza, 2008) Stuligrosz, MagdalenaThe author of the article presents Greek sympotic and dining customs mentioned by Philoxenus of Leucas in his poem Deipnon in comparison with the archaic and classical model of sympotic behaviour. She shows the importance of moderation and balance not only in consumption of food and wine but also in various aspects of entertainment contained within the symposium part of the meal.Item „Emmanuelis Alvari syntaxis” – przez dwa wieki(Wydawnictwo Naukowe Uniwersytetu im. Adama Mickiewicza, 2008) Popiak, WandaThe paper briefy touches the Latin syntax elaborated by Emmanuel Alvares (1526–1582). The book was published in Poland in 1577 and was used in our schools till 1815. The author of the paper shows how the manual was employed in Poland with the passing of time.Item Zeus w „Argonautykach” Apolloniosa z Rodos(Wydawnictwo Naukowe Uniwersytetu im. Adama Mickiewicza, 2008) Rostropowicz, JoannaAccording to Apollonius Rhodius, Zeus is a force constituting the order in the world, he is the author of history, the course of all events depends on him, he has foreseen everything in the least details. The plan created by Zeus has to be fulflled without any changes, because his will became predestination to which he is subordinated. Zeus is a warrenter of law and order among people, he rewards them for merits and punishes for crimes, but gives them possibility to expiate their guilts. The guilt unexpiated by its perpetrator will reach the members of his family. Each of the gods, both the Olympian ones and those of lower rank behave in their activity according to the resolutions of the supreme god. They are executors of his will and exponents of his intentions. In outline, the idea of Zeus does not differ from the vision of this god, which we can reconstruct on the basis of works by Callimachus and Theocritus as well as by Aratos of Soli.Item Exulowie wszystkich czasów, czyli Owidiusz i inni(Wydawnictwo Naukowe Uniwersytetu im. Adama Mickiewicza, 2008) Milewska-Waźbińska, BarbaraThe aim of this paper is to examine how 20th century draws inspiration from Ovid’s exile and his works. The paper examines how Jacek Kaczmarski offers a poet “a response” to Ovidian exile.Item Prati-smr(i)ti w świetle nauk o wybaczeniu w „Mahabharacie”(Wydawnictwo Naukowe Uniwersytetu im. Adama Mickiewicza, 2008) Sachse, JoannaIn the article the author discusses the virtue of forgiveness with which the perfect Brahmin Vasishtha is endowed (Mhbh. I 11, 165 and which is also highly valued by Yudhisthira (Mhbh. III 31, 26-36). Against this background the magic art of prati-smr(i)ti into which Yudhisthira was initiated by Vyasa (Mhbh. III 37, 25-35). An assumption is made that in it is concealed the art of forgiveness.
