Item 80-lecie urodzin profesora dra hab. Bronisława Jasickiego(Polskie Towarzystwo Antropologiczne, 1986) Sikora, PawełProfessor Bronisław JASICKI was born in Sporysz on the 12th of January 1907. Since 1928 he has worked at the Jagellonian University, at first under the direction of Professor J. Talko-Hryncewicz, then Professors Kazimierz and Eugenia Stołyhwo. He devoted his entire life to anthropology. He directed and participated in research projects in ontogenetics (including research on the population of the Żywiec region). He is an author of numerous and original works in this field. For many years he was the head of the Anthropology Division of the Jagellonian University. He educated many anthropologists as a promotor and reviewer of numerous master theses, doctoral dissertations and works qualifying for the position of an assistant professor and professor. He has made an invaluable contribution to the development of Polish anthropology.Item A report on physical performance in female patients diseased for idiopathic scoliosis(Polskie Towarzystwo Antropologiczne, 2001) Laurentowska, Maria; Szczepanowska, Ewa; Głowacki, Maciej; Rychlewski, TadeuszThe purpose of this study was to examine physical performance and exercise tolerance in patients with scoliosis in comparison with healthy girls of the similar age. Results of the study show the similar aerobic performance in both groups. However, exercise tolerance was significantly lower in patients with scoliosis than in the control group. Similarly, resting values af cardiac output and stroke volume were significantly lower in girls with scoliosis as comared with healthy girls.Item A report on the occurrence of accessory triradii in the subdigital area, and carpal triradii on the palm in Polish and Czech populations(Polskie Towarzystwo Antropologiczne, 2000) Gąsiorowski, Adam; Hajn, VáclavThe study analyses the occurrence of accessory triradii and carpal triradii on human palms in two populations. Accessory triradii were observed in Polish and Czech populations very rarely (triradius d' was most frequent). The occurrence of the abortive main line C(Y) was observed more often in the Polish population and it was statistically significant difference. A very high symmetry was stated between the occurrence of forms C(Y) and c(X) on right and left palms. A higher frequency of occurrence was stated in the case of carpal triradius t in the Polish population and of triradius t' in the Czech population. However, the differences are not statistically significant.Item A review of anthropological approaches to ageing(Polskie Towarzystwo Antropologiczne, 1997) Kaczmarek, Maria; Szwed, AnitaIt is evident that the pattern of ageing among humans has a unique character. Therefore, when undertaking any research on human ageing one has to specify a proper methodology and methods which are available in the anthropological perspective. The paper is aimed at providing a review of anthropological approaches to the study of ageing. On the basis of the meaning and scope of the concept of ageing, its sources and causal factors are discussed. Further, functional, physiological and morphological indicators of ageing are briefly described. Much attention is focused on the concept of biological age which is the key notion for assessment of variation in the rates of human ageing.Item Acceleration and secular trend in a survey ot the Olomouc children and youth(Polskie Towarzystwo Antropologiczne, 1995) Riegerova, JarmilaACCELERATION AND SECULAR TREND IN A SURVEY OF OLOMOUC CHILDREN AND YOUTH. On the basis of the graphs and standardization indexes we document the changes of basic anthropometric characteristics in a period of 20 to 32 years.Item Adaptacyjne aspekty hominizacji Część II. Przystosowania pokarmowe(Polskie Towarzystwo Antropologiczne, 1994) Kujawa, BetinaADAPTATIVE ASPECTS OF HOMINIZATION. PART II. NUTRITIVE ADAPTATIONS. Both some geological, climatic and material traces that are used in paleonthology let reconstruct the complex of the adaptative traits that were developed in Australopithecines. The environmental conditions of South-Eastern Africa in late Pliocene and early Pleistocene directed some morphological, physiological and behavioural changes which the first hominids underwent.Item Adaptacyjne aspekty hominizacji. Część I. Przystosowania morfologiczne i fizjologiczne(Polskie Towarzystwo Antropologiczne, 1993) Kujawa, BetinaADAPTIVE ASPECTS OF HOMINIZATION. PART I. MORPHOLOGICAL AND PHYSIOLOGICAL ADAPTATIONS. Both some geological, climatic and material traces that are used in paleonthology let reconstruct the complex of the adaptive traits that were developed in Australopithecines. The environmental conditions of the South-Eastern Africa in late Pliocene and early Pleistocene directed some morphological, physiological and behavioural changes which the first hominids underwent.Item Adolescent growth and its relation to menarche, dental and somatic maturation(Polskie Towarzystwo Antropologiczne, 2002) Kaczmarek, MariaRelationships between growth in height during adolescence and menarche, somatic, and dental maturation were analyzed on longitudinal data for 181 boys and 176 girls from the Poznań Growth Study. It was found that the correlation pattern between variables shifts during the spurt indicating the following regularities: The younger and smaller the boys and girls were at the onset of the spurt, and the lower the height velocity at that time, the longer their spurt was likely to last, and the adolescent height increment was larger. Neither the timing of the spurt, nor the spurt duration or height gain had and influence on the final height. The maturation of the dentition was weekly, or no significantly, correlated with growth in height. The age at menarche revealed significant correlations with all characteristics of the growth spurt except for adolescent increment and adult height.Item Age at menopause and reproductive determinants in Polish women(Polskie Towarzystwo Antropologiczne, 2001) Kaczmarek, Maria; Szwed, AnitaSelected reproductive determinants of age at menopause were analyzed using data from a representative sample of 4354 women aged 35-65 years. The data were collected in cross-sectional surveys carried out in Wielkopolska and Western part of Poland in the years 1998 to 2001. Menopausal status and median and mean ages at menopause were estimated with the use of retrospective and status-quo methods. It was found that the median age at natural menopause, estimated by probit analysis, was 50.1 years. Women, who had been treated with HRT (Hormonal Replacement Therapy) in the period perimenopause, underwent manopause significantly later - their median age at menopause was 52.9 years. Results of ANOVA revealed that of all characteristic of female reproduction taken into consideration, age at menarche and lenght of menstruation cycle had significant influence on age at menopause. Menopause occurred markedly later in women who began to menstruate after 15 years of age and whose menstrual cycles lasted longer than 32 days. Reproductive determinants were considered as a complex factor. Stepwise multiple regression analysis with backward elimination revealed that the reproductive determinants including the lenght of menstruation cycle, age at menarhe, age at first and last pregnancies and lenght of lactation in combination affected age at menopause.Item Age of menarche in girls with sight organ diseases(Polskie Towarzystwo Antropologiczne, 2000) Umławska, WiolettaThe paper attempts to clarify the reasons for sooner pubescence of girls with sight defects than that of their normally seeing peers. The age of menarche was considered depending on the degree of the sight impairment and the disease etiology as well as some selected factors of the socio-economic environment in the examined girls' familiesItem Akceleracja rozwoju i zmiany sekularne cech morfologicznych młodzieży wrocławskiej(Polskie Towarzystwo Antropologiczne, 1993) Ignasiak, Zofia; Sławińska, TeresaACCELERATION OF GROWTH AND SECULAR TREND AMONG YOUNG PEOPLE IN WROCŁAW. Research materials are taken from longitudinal studies of children in Wroclaw. The measurements were carried out nineteen years apart. Children between the ages 8-15 were studied. Height and body mass were analized, as well as the Rohrer index and the thickness of three skinfolds.Item An attempt to evaluate some personality characteristics of Wrocław high school graduates of different pubescence age(Polskie Towarzystwo Antropologiczne, 2000) Kolasa, Ewa; Umławska, Wioletta; Olszewska, EwaAn attempt was made to establish the correlation between the time of reaching sexual maturity and the level of physical development. The material consisted of data obtained from schoolgirls of final classes of 6 secondary schools. In a questionnaire, the girls provided retrospective data concerning the age of menarche, and replied to questions being the basis for sexual maturity evaluation.Item An attempt to evaluate the criteria for diagnosing nonspecific inflammatory diseases observed on ancient skeletons(Polskie Towarzystwo Antropologiczne, 1997) Prejzner, Witold; Gładykowska-Rzeczycka, Judyta JuliaThe study presents the criteria for diagnosing nonspecific inflammatory diseases observed on ancient bones. It is very important to remember about two forms of ostitis - acute and chronic, and about diseases causing similar changes, e.g. tuberculosis, lues, brucelosis, cysts, osteoid-osteoma.Item An interesting variation in the fifth lumbar vertebra(Polskie Towarzystwo Antropologiczne, 1994) Chorn, David J.; Rule, Lucy-MayVariations in the lumbosacral region of the vertebral column are frequent and well documented [Hibbs, Swift 1929; Horwttz, Smith 1940; Nathan, Arensburgh 1972]. Ten percent of patients presenting with symptoms of low back-pain are found to have some segmental anomaly of the lumbosacral spine [McCulloch, Waddell 1980]. In the present report, an interesting variation of the fifth lumbar, vertebra (L5) is described and appraised with respect to its embryology and its possible functional significance.Item An old species and a new frontier: Some thoughts on the taxonomy of Homo erectus(Polskie Towarzystwo Antropologiczne, 2001) Wang, Qian; Tobias, Philip V.The taxonomic impact on Homo erectus induced by a "preerctus-out-of-Africa" paradigm is preliminarily discussed in this article. Some of the early Homo species in Asia should be allocated to another taxon rather than to H. erectus, although teir real identities are not yet readily apparent. Asian H. erectus may be taxonomically distinct from African H. ergaster. Differences between two samples of H. erectus from Java and China, suggesting taxonomic diversity or only geographical variances between these subset, need further study. Reasons are advanced against the proposal to lump H. erecus into H. sapiens. Item Analiza porównawcza niektórych metod oznaczania zawartości tkanki tłuszczowej(Polskie Towarzystwo Antropologiczne, 1996) Nawarycz, Tadeusz; Jankowski, Jerzy; Baszczyński, Jan; Nawarycz-Ostrowska, Lidia; Kajdos, ZdzisławCOMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF SOME METHODS OF MEASURING THE TOTAL BODY FAT. The objective of this study was the comparison o f three different methods: skin fold thikness, near infrared spectrophotometry and bioelectrical impedance for estimation of the total body fat. The measurements were made on the sample of 48 young men, 18-20 years old. The results turned out to be independent of the method which was used for estimation of the total body fatItem Analiza zmian w rozwoju cech somatycznych i motorycznych młodzieży akademickiej zbadanej w odstępie dziesięciu lat(Polskie Towarzystwo Antropologiczne, 1988) Chlebicka, ElżbietaANALYSIS OF CHANGES IN TOE DEVELOPMENT OF SOMATIC AND MOTORIC TRAITS IN ACADEMIC YOUTH EXAMINED 10 YEARS APART. Significant differences were found in the parameters of fatness which are bigger in males. Within the period of ten years the general physical; ability in men and women did not change much.'The biggest differences were found in endurance and agility.Item Analysis of morphological differences between prehistoric populations using a non-hierarchic method of data clustering(Polskie Towarzystwo Antropologiczne, 1999) Sołtysiak, Arkadiusz; Jaskulski, PiotrPresented in this paper non-hierarchic method of cluster analysis allows studying of morphological variability in big populations on the basis of individual characteristic of specimens. Test taken by the authors have confirmed correct results of the proposed algorithm and showed the role of proper preparation of data, choice of appropriate distance measure and importance of the process of interpretation the results of clustering.Item Analysis of transmissible and nontransmissible components of variation in human physique(Polskie Towarzystwo Antropologiczne, 1996) Kaczmarek, MariaThe paper is aimed at decomposition the continuously varying phenotype into components due to transmissible and nontransmissible factors. The linear causal model (path analysis) was applied to incorporate the contribution of environmental sources of variation (described in terms of indices of socioeconomic status) to familial resemblance on physique (height and weight) in 342 nuclear families. Parameters of the causal model were estimated according to the TAU transmission model of Rice, Cloninger, Reich [1978] and linear constraints placed upon the parameters were tested. The proportion of total phenotypic variance accounted for by genetic and environmental transmissible factors was estimated to be 62% for height and 3 8% for weight
