This article is devoted to the key persons in honour proceedings - the seconds, who were also known as honorary deputies. Through a comparative analysis of Wladyslaw Boziewicz’ s codes of honour, the Polish Code of Honour (1919) and General Rules of Honorary Conduct (1927), a reconstruction will be made of the normativity of the role of seconds contained in them. This will allow us to trace the direction of changes in Boziewicz ’ s reflection on the essence of the course of honour proceedings, which is contained in his codifications. Thus, one of his points of social criticism directed against the practice of honour proceedings will be revealed. The study will demonstrate how, in Boziewicz ’ s reflection on honour proceedings, the role of autonomous moral reflection of honour deputies and the ethical community they represent has increased in relation to the will of their principals.Item Filozofia kosmologii antropicznej(Wydawnictwo Poznańskiego Towarzystwa Przyjaciół Nauk, 2021) Leciejewski, Sławomir; Juchacz, Piotr W.; Cern, Karolina M.In the second half of the 20th century, research in the field of scientific cosmology began to focus on the fact that protein life forms existed on one of the planets. The relations between, on the one hand, the structure, development and origin of the universe and, on the other, the possibility of the existence and duration of life, started to be described in different versions of anthropic principles. The universe in which the emergence and evolution of protein life forms was possible came to be called the anthropic universe. Thus, the hitherto three-part research field of cosmology (the structure, development and origin of the universe) was supplemented with a fourth component: the origin of life in the universe. In other words, anthropic cosmology would attempt not only to reconstruct and describe the structure, development and origin of the universe, but it would also discuss the origin and possibility of the evolution of life in this universe. The anthropic current in cosmology also emerged as part of an attempt to resolve the difficulties that arose in the cosmology of the 1970s. The many problems encountered by the standard cosmological model inspired a search for new ways of analysing cosmological issues. This resulted in the emergence of so-called anthropic explanation, which formed the basis of anthropic cosmology. The aim of the book is to provide a general introduction to selected issues connected with a very broad field of research located on the borderline between philosophy and cosmology. The first chapter will present the scientific and philosophical dimensions of cosmology. In the second chapter, cosmic coincidences and the cosmic context of life will be discussed, and the basic formulations of the anthropic principle will be reviewed. The concluding third chapter will identify how anthropic cosmology can be understood today, before outlining its basic philosophical implications.Item Filozoficzne ujęcie konfliktu metrologicznego w obszarze ewaluacji nauki(2021) Krzeski, Jakub; Kulczycki, Emanuel. Promotor; Szadkowski, Krystian. Item Filozofka i paso doble(Wydawnictwo Poznańskiego Towarzystwa Przyjaciół Nauk, 2021) Malitowska, Anna; Juchacz, Piotr W.; Cern, Karolina M.The subject of the book is ballroom dancing, understood as an artistic-cultural practice. The author outlines the problem context, in which dance as a cultural phenomenon is not a common subject of research, especially in Poland. As for ballroom dance – it is of even less interest to academia. Its artistry seems unnoticed by art in general, while its culture-forming dimension is marginalized in education. This “cultural absence” clearly contrasts with the growing popularity of ballroom dancing as a competitive sport, or form of mass entertainment provided by television programs such as “Dancing with the Stars”. Starting from such a diagnosis, the author demonstrates that ballroom dance extends beyond its sporting, utilitarian or consumerist dimensions and is becoming a self-conscious artistic practice that affects social and cultural discourses. The book consists of three essays, each of them presenting a different theoretical perspective on ballroom dancing. The first essay, exploring the field of choreography, examines how composition, which transforms gestures and figures into routines, is nourished by cultural traditions. The understanding and interpretation of dance are addressed in the second essay, which develops a “dance audience” concept, building on hermeneutics and cultural semiotics. In the third essay, the author presents ballroom dancing as a historical discourse of art and discusses the role of cultural competencies in dance-art creation, understanding, appraisal, and alteration. The argument made in the book is illustrated with references to the choreographies and achievements of leading ballroom couples, and is supported by findings in the fields of critical cultural studies, philology, literature studies, linguistics and semiotics, and art history, as well as research on visual culture and performance art.Item Freedom and Abundance: Dialogical Philosophy of Style(Wydawnictwo Poznańskiego Towarzystwa Przyjaciół Nauk, 2021) Gan-Krzywoszyńska, Katarzyna; Juchacz, Piotr W.; Cern, Karolina M.This book presents an outline of the dialogical philosophy of style and it consists of three chapters. The first chapter, Literature and style, introduces the concept of philosophy as a story and presents an analogical approach to dialogue. According to Nietzsche’s The Joyful Wisdom, style constitutes a comprehensive, coherent outlook on life: living in harmony with oneself and the world. Following Genova, the signature and meaning-expressing conception of style are considered in comparison with Sontag’s approach to style from the dialogical point of view. The chapter ends with the concept of style as editing, and in this context I present the notion of attention in the sense employed by Weil. The second chapter, Attitude: Freedom And Flexibility, advocates establishing harmony with both oneself and with others, in accordance with the ideas of Thibon and Pronzato, and briefly examined styles of education. Integrity as a criterion of a refined style is based on the moral dimension. In consequence, coherence and clarity lead to an individual style that paradoxically excludes competition. The issues of spontaneity, originality and improvisation are discussed. The final question of flexibility – within the art of life, which is the art of war – is considered, since a fight for one’s style constitutes the greatest victory. The third chapter, Abundance and Joy, is about pluralism and presents creativity from a dialogical perspective, with special emphasis on Freire’s notion of “untested feasibilities” and on appreciation instead of appropriation. The issue of abundance is crucial to the proposed dialogical concept of style. Style as an important contribution to wisdom as a technology of the good life is discussed, and some examples of contemporary applications of the dialogical philosophy of style are presented.Item Health privacy, racialization, and the causal potential of legal regulations(Taylor & Francis, 2022-07-03) Malinowska, Joanna Karolina; Chomański, BartłomiejOur commentary addresses three issues. First, we point out an additional problematic dimension of excessive health privacy loss, namely, the potential racialization of groups and individuals that it may likely contribute to. Second, we note that, in our view, the authors’ argument for more regulation rests on an invidious comparison between the realistically described status quo and the idealized picture of the imagined regulatory regime that the authors briefly propose. Third, we argue that, despite existing regulations, both private and government actors frequently use private data in ways that lead to ethically problematic outcomes, especially when it comes to racialized communities.Item How can the inferentialist make room for the distinction between factual and linguistic correctness?(Taylor & Francis, 2023-04-11) Kaluziński, BartoszBrandom (Citation1994) made inferentialism an intensely debated idea in the philosophy of language in the last three decades. Inferentialism is a view that associates the meaning of linguistic expression with the role said expression plays in inferences. It seems rather uncontroversial that the correct theory of meaning should distinguish between linguistic correctness and factual correctness. For instance, speaker S can be wrong in saying ‘I have arthritis’ in two distinct ways: (i) S fails to apply a word correctly to make a true statement due to having made a factual error, and (ii) S uses an expression incorrectly because they are wrong about its meaning. In this paper, I show that properly understood normative inferentialism can make room for such a distinction. I propose that linguistic correctness is a structural issue: linguistic mistakes stem from the improper or insufficient acquisition of an inferential role. Factual correctness, on the other hand, is a one-off issue of the correct application of inferential rules to a particular situation. I argue that, by tying the issue of correctness to the game of giving and asking for reasons, inferentialism can establish a reliable method for distinguishing between two types of correctness (and mistakes).Item Ideologie nieautorytarne – rozwój jednostki a edukacja demokratyczna(Wydawnictwo Poznańskiego Towarzystwa Przyjaciół Nauk, 2021) Michałowska, Danuta AnnaSome selected issues from the philosophy of education concern ideologies of education, especially the non-authoritarian ones indicated by Roland Meighan, the concept of person-centred education, and education for democracy. The aim of the analyses is an attempt to define a model of education that will foster young people’s creative development, respecting their autonomy and, in parallel, that will begin building a democratic society already at the stage of student communities. The ideology of autonomously learning the concept of autonomy, the principles of self-regulation in the learning process, the specific roles of the teacher and the student, as well as the style of work and strategies for acquiring knowledge and skills – all these issues are discussed in the context of the problem of achieving the goals of democratic education. The issue of individual freedom and autonomy in education is analysed and, drawing on the example of an English independent school, the features of the educational process which lead to the realization of most of the assumptions of non-uthoritarian ideology and a flexible approach to teaching are described. In the ‘learner-centred school’ model of Donna Brandes and Paul Ginnis, based on the humanistic approach to education developed by Carl Rogers and Fritz Perls, the autonomously developing individual has the opportunity to experience the limits of freedom, responsibility for their choices and for the quality of relationships, as well as cooperation and community building based on democratic principles. The analysis of the democratic model of education and school practices indicates the possibilities for building democratic student communities while at the same time providing conditions for the comprehensive development of the person and their autonomy. It is a philosophy of education focused on the person – one who belongs a community of autonomous individuals. Item Jowita zostaje: historia 10 dni ruchu studenckiego(Wydawnictwo Ekonomiczne Heterodox, 2024) Kalbarczyk, Magdalena. Opracowanie; Ochwat, Adam. Opracowanie; Radomski, Szymon. Opracowanie; Szadkowski, Krystian. Opracowanie; Straszewski, Jakub. Opracowanie; Taran, Aleksandra. Opracowanie; Wilczyńska, Gabriela. OpracowanieItem Methodological and Ethical Risks Associated with the Epistemic Unification of Tribe Members(Taylor & Francis, 2021-07-09) Malinowska, Joanna KarolinaIn my commentary, I discuss the risk that shifting the focus from individuals to a group subject (even in ethical discussions on their participation in research) may strengthen the epistemic tendency to treat tribes as a homogeneous group.Item Multilingual Publishing in the Social Sciences and Humanities: A Seven-Country European Study(2020) Kulczycki, Emanuel; Guns, Raf; Pölönen, Janne; Engels, Tim C. E.; Rozkosz, Ewa A.; Zuccala, Alesia A.; Bruun, Kasper; Eskola, Olli; Starčič, Andreja Istenič; Petr, Michal; Sivertsen, GunnarWe investigate the state of multilingualism across the social sciences and humanities (SSH) using a comprehensive data set of research outputs from seven European countries (Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, Flanders [Belgium], Norway, Poland, and Slovenia). Although English tends to be the dominant language of science, SSH researchers often produce culturally and societally relevant work in their local languages. We collected and analyzed a set of 164,218 peer‐reviewed journal articles (produced by 51,063 researchers from 2013 to 2015) and found that multilingualism is prevalent despite geographical location and field. Among the researchers who published at least three journal articles during this time period, over one‐third from the various countries had written their work in at least two languages. The highest share of researchers who published in only one language were from Flanders (80.9%), whereas the lowest shares were from Slovenia (57.2%) and Poland (59.3%). Our findings show that multilingual publishing is an ongoing practice in many SSH research fields regardless of geographical location, political situation, and/or historical heritage. Here we argue that research is international, but multilingual publishing keeps locally relevant research alive with the added potential for creating impact.Item Open access challenge at the national level: Comprehensive analysis of publication channels used by Finnish researchers in 2016-2017(Edizioni Efesto, 2019) Pölönen, Janne; Kulczycki, Emanuel; Laakso, Mikael; Sivertsen, GunnarThe purpose of this paper is to provide a comprehensive picture of open access publishing in Finland. Data consists of the complete national peer-reviewed output of 48177 articles and books from 14 Finnish universities in 2016- 2017 stored in the VIRTA Publication Information Service. Each publication record contains an indication if it is openly available as Gold or Hybrid OA and/or if it is deposited in OA repository. Using this data, we investigate the share of openly available outputs across fields, as well as journal and book publishing, and analyse the open access status of all 10342 publication channels (joumal/series and book publishers) used by Finnish researchers. We also examine the utility of international open access information sources, DOAJ and Bielefeld list for OA journals, and Sherpa/Romeo for self-archiving policies, in estimating the potential for open availability of peer- reviewed outputs, as well as the importance of the largest international commercial publishers in light of these comprehensive national data.Item Prawo podmiotowe Etyka – prawo – polityka(Poznańskiego Towarzystwa Przyjaciół Nauk, 2021) Raburski, Tomasz; Juchacz, Piotr W.; Cern, Karolina M.The book explores the concept of rights in three fields: law, morality, and politics. Rights are treated as a bridge-concept, connecting those fields. The work draws heavily on English-, German- and Polish-language sources. The differences between those academic discourses on rights, Rechte and prawa are discussed. The introductory chapter examines the meaning of the concept, and the variety in the forms of rights. The differences between the English concept of right and the Polish prawo podmiotowe are discussed. The first chapter presents the moral aspect of rights, i.e. the features of the language of rights in comparison to other moral languages, and the role of rights in contemporary ethical theories (esp. utilitarianism). The second chapter examines legal rights. The German concept of Reflexrecht is described. Two forms of legal institutions are compared: one based on rights and the other on well-being. Legislators have to choose which form they use when they enact the law. Several examples are analyzed – what are the consequences of such choices and what are guiding principles helping the legislators to make them. In the third chapter, the politics of rights is discussed, and its three forms are examined in detail: strategic litigation, strengthening of democratic principles, and the empowerment of social movements. The book concludes with a historical chapter, outlining common mistakes about the evolution of rights and their historical role. Two historical moments are discussed in more detail: the conflict of intellectual traditions in 19th century Polish political discourse, and the Marxist critique of rights in socialist legal systems, which led to attempts to replace rights with other institutional forms.Item Publication counting methods for a national research evaluation exercise(2019) Korytkowski, Przemysław; Kulczycki, EmanuelIn this paper, we investigate the effects of using four methods of publication counting (complete, whole, fractional, square root fractional) and limiting the number of publications (at researcher and institution levels) on the results of a national research evaluation exercise across fields using Polish data. We use bibliographic information on 0.58 million publications from the 2013–2016 period. Our analysis reveals that the largest effects are in those fields within which a variety publication and cooperation patterns can be observed (e.g. in Physical sciences or History and archeology). We argue that selecting the publication counting method for national evaluation purposes needs to take into account the current situation in the given country in terms of the excellence of research outcomes, level of internal, external and international collaboration, and publication patterns in the various fields of sciences. Our findings show that the social sciences and humanities are not significantly influenced by the different publication counting methods and limiting the number of publications included in the evaluation, as publication patterns in these fields are quite different from those observed in the so-called hard sciences. When discussing the goals of any national research evaluation system, we should be aware that the ways of achieving these goals are closely related to the publication counting method, which can serve as incentives for certain publication practices. Item Researchers publishing monographs are more productive and more local‑oriented(2020) Kulczycki, Emanuel; Korytkowski, PrzemysławIn this study, we investigate what share of researchers publish monographs across fields, gender and seniority. We acquired data from the Polish current research information system (POL-on) containing metadata of about 1,031,141 peer-reviewed publications from 67,415 Polish researchers, including 30,185 monographs from 2013 to 2016. The data are aggregated at the researcher level, which allows us to shed new light on publication patterns in all fields. We show that scholars who publish monographs also publish journal articles at the same time. This pattern is observed in all dimensions, i.e. research fields, gender and seniority. However, substantial differences between the fields are observed. Moreover, we show that researchers who publish monographs are also more productive in terms of the number of publications than researchers who did not publish any monographs. This result is independent of the publication counting method, i.e. fractional or whole counting. At the same time, scholars who publish monographs are more local-oriented in terms of the publication channels they choose.Item The use of Gold Open Access in four European countries: An analysis at the level of articles(Edizioni Efesto, 2019) Sivertsen, Gunnar; Guns, Raf; Kulczycki, Emanuel; Pölönen, JanneWe assess the use and potential of Gold Open Access (OA) in Finland, Flanders (Belgium), Norway, and Poland by comparing data at the level of articles from full-coverage databases in each country. The inclusion of the journals in the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ) is used as a reference to determine Gold Open Access. Gold OA is on the rise in all four countries and across fields, but some countries, especially Norway, and some fields have a substantially larger proportion of OA publications than others, with the overall share of Gold OA ranging from 5.7% to 17.3%. Especially in the SSH, a mixture of local and international journals can be found, many of which are not indexed in databases like Web of Science. As such, our results indicate that an overview of the state of Gold OA is preferably obtained by comparing DOAJ to a full-coverage database.Item Tożsamość narracyjna w dobie postprawdy. Pytanie o aktualność myśli Charlesa Taylora(Wydawnictwo Poznańskiego Towarzystwa Przyjaciół Nauk, 2021) Filipiak, Magdalena; Juchacz, Piotr W.; Karolina, M. CernThe term ‘post-truth’ is widely used to describe the status of facts in public discourse. The term implies that arguments appealing to emotions and beliefs play a greater role in shaping public opinion than do arguments based on facts. This book attempts to answer the question of whether the concept of narrative identity, formulated by Charles Taylor in the late 1980s, is still relevant today, if we consider the importance of post-truth in the construction of modern subjectivity. In Taylor’s conception, narrative identity is an orientation in axiological space, and a person defines their attitude towards others through narration and articulation, thus becoming aware of their own axiological map. The source of knowledge about the subject’s “conceptual framework” is conversation, conducted in the medium of language, hence an essential aspect of identity formation is a certain vision of the truthfulness or acceptability of meanings. Taylor puts forward an expressivist conception of meaning, according to which meaning in public space is the result of a conversation involving the disclosure of subjective expressions, beliefs, feelings, sentiments and opinions. From this perspective, Taylor’s conception seems to be extremely up-to-date and appropriate for the contemporary climate of post-truth. Taylor’s analysis of the sources of modern subjectivity can thus be viewed as revealing the mechanisms conducive to shaping the current atmosphere of post-truth. Among such mechanisms, we can mention the features residing on the side of the subject, such as the affirmation of everyday life, a kind of internalization of the subject, assigning great value to human interiority, objectification as a “point” identity, and an understanding of freedom; as well as certain factors outside the subject, namely aspects of the modern world such as secularization, temporality and value pluralism.
