Infantry in the Eastern Theatre of the Civil War
Abstract
Praca stanowi próbę analizy uwarunkowań rządzących rolą, jaką odgrywała piechota armii Unii i Konfederacji podczas działań na wschodnim teatrze wojny secesyjnej w latach 1861-1865. Sposób realizacji podjętego tematu zbliżony jest do prac takich autorów jak Paddy Griffith, Brent Nosworthy i Earl J. Hess, tak więc szczególny nacisk położony został na kwestie taktyczne, zawężone do jednego teatru działań i jednego rodzaju broni. Uwzględnione zostały takie aspekty jak struktura organizacyjna, teoretyczne podstawy taktyki oraz szkolenia piechoty. Zasadnicza część pracy dotyczy różnych aspektów pola walki: ataków na bagnety, walki ogniowej w linii i tyralierze, wpływu terenu i fortyfikacji polowych. Ponadto omówiony został wpływ dwóch pozostałych broni głównych – kawalerii i artylerii – na działania piechoty. Celem pracy jest rozwinięcie badań wymienionych autorów poprzez poświęcenie większej uwagi takim kwestiom jak np. zakres szkolenia, zużycie amunicji w toku długotrwałych walk ogniowych czy zastosowanie czworoboków do obrony przed kawalerią.
This dissertation is an attempt to analyze the conditions influencing the role played by the Union and Confederate infantry during operations in the Eastern Theater of the American Civil War in the years 1861-1865. The treatment of this subject is similar to one found in the works of authors such as Paddy Griffith, Brent Nosworthy and Earl J. Hess, and therefore special emphasis was placed on tactical issues, narrowed down however to one theater of war and one of three main arms. Themes such as organizational structure, the theoretical foundations of tactics and the training of infantry were additionally taken into account. The main part of the work deals with different aspects of the actions on the battlefield: the bayonet charges, firefights in close and open order and the impact of terrain and field fortifications. Moreover, what was discussed in the work was the impact of the other two main arms - cavalry and artillery - on the actions of infantry. The aim of the work is to develop and elaborate on the issues addressed by aforementioned authors, by devoting more attention to elements such as training, the consumption of ammunition in the course of long firefights and the use of squares to defend against cavalry.
