Rufi Festi Avieni Aratea: a monographic sketch

Abstract

The subject of the dissertation is the last extant Roman translation of Phaenomena by Aratus of Soli. The studies situate Avienus’ life and works in the second half of the 4th century AD. The thesis took a form of a monographic sketch with the primary aim of constructing an overall presentation on the poet and his opus, which is a work hitherto absent in Polish classical studies. It contributes to the research by examining three main areas: 1. situating Avienus’ Aratea in the cultural context of the fourth century; 2. examination of the genological features of the Aratea as a didactic poem; 3. analysis of Avienus’ poetics of translation by comparison to Cicero’s and Germanicus’ Aratea. The main conclusions are as follows: - the motif, a general idea around which the poem revolves, is frenzy (Lat. furor); - the author adds mythological tales that accompany the descriptions of the night sky according to his own key - the astronomical mistakes commited by Aratus are preserved as a part of his own idea of being faithful to the general directives of Phaenomena; - the poet often refers to his poem as a translation, thus conducting a dialogue with the reader and presenting his poem as an emulation with the original. The thesis concludes with a Polish translation of Avienus’ poem with a commentary.
