Dualism in Career Perception – Emphasising Its Subjective and Objective Sense

Abstract

Contemporary research on career demands takes into account multi-contextual changes in the world of work. For employees, these changes mean new requirements. A plethora of theoretical attempts to define the career more precisely undoubtedly shows the multiplicity of problems in the analysis of this complex phenomenon. Contemporary discussion on the subject of career is definitely linked with emphasising the subjective and objective sense attributed to it. The following considerations will constitute an attempt to describe and explain a dualistic career perception in symbolic interactionism. Theorizing the problem of individual career practice stresses issues related to the possibility to understand reasonable actions taken by individuals. These are the actions that make social life meaningful. In this tradition, social structures are considered to create a context for the meaning of human creativity. The main focus is on the interplay between societies and organisations. This game constitutes the structure of the position in which individuals are present and within which identifiable career patterns are created.
