Synthesis and characterization of composites containing organic dyes entrapped in the molecular sieves

Abstract

Krystalizacja pozwalała na enkapsulację barwnika w wąskoporowatych strukturach CAN i PHI.
Series of the molecular sieves such as zeolites (e.g. FAU, LTL, MFI, CAN, PHI), materials AlPO4, mesoporous (SBA-3, SBA-15, MCM-41), and the MOF materials were used as matrices for encapsulation of fluorescein and methylene blue. Fluorescein was synthesized and entrapped inside molecular sieves mainly by the synthesis from substrates (phthalic anhydride and resorcinol). Crystalline and porous structures of zeolites as well as zeolite cations (acid sites) play an important role in catalytic substrate reaction and subsequently in the resulting dye content, localization and the nature of its tautomeric form. The resulted composites show much higher fluorescence intensity and life time than pristine dye and do not undergo any photobleaching. The nanozeolite matrices make the optical properties of composites even more excellent. The introduction of fluorescein upon zeolite crystallization appeared not very efficient. Fluorescein was also introduced to MOF materials, which was not reported so far. The methylene blue was introduced into molecular sieves (mostly into zeolites) by ion exchange or by crystallization of molecular sieves in the presence of dye (LTL, CAN, PHI). The attempts to use this dye as structure directing agent (templating agents) did not appear succesful either. The crystallization of zeolites with methylene blue in highly alkaline medium caused a transformation of dye into its colorless leuco form. The obtained composites exhibit very interesting properties, especially optical (fluorescence) and they are promising materials for medical (theranostic) applications.
