Contemporary Youth (Sub)cultures in Contexts of Commercialization and Globalization

Abstract

Contemporary youth subcultures are not a margin of social life. They are a part of the dominant culture, mainly due to commercialization and globalization, but also owing to progressive technological development and mediatization. Rebelliousness known from last decades has been silenced. What counts more today for members of youth subcultures, are subcultural artefacts, fun, consumption and entertainment rather than ideology, politics or contestation of the dominant culture. They have undergone through a transformation. They have become global social networks, similar to each other in various local realities (within the western culture). Significantly, their emergence and existence is in addition connected with processes of urbanization. Nothing else but the cities are the space of the most interesting subcultural activities. Moreover, members of the contemporary subcultures spend much time in cyberspace. The following thesis is concerned with chosen youth subcultures (musical, related to urban extreme sports and visual), which can be classified as “soft” subcultures, generally passing as positive phenomena, being elements of the popular culture, connected with artistic, fun&entertainment and intellectual activity. It is comprised of the following chapters: “Defining Subculturality”, “Characteristics of Youth Subcultures”, “Subcultural Spaces”, “Subcultural Artefacts” and “Research Methodology”.
