Abstract
Artykuł przedstawia główne aspekty zaproponowanej przez Richarda Rorty’ego wizji współczesnego uniwersytetu – filozof odniósł się do myśli Sokratesa i Platona, przyznając, że obaj stworzyli podwaliny dla „wyzwolonej” edukacji, przy czym ich sposoby ujęcia tego tematu znacząco się różniły. Amerykański neopragmatysta był zdania, że to filozofia Sokratejska powinna konstytuować kształt dzisiejszych studiów akademickich, gdyż w przeciwieństwie do Platona, Sokrates był przekonany, że nie istnieje jedna, niepodważalna prawda, do której można dotrzeć. Rorty przekonywał, że taka postawa poznawcza jest zasadna także współcześnie, szczególnie na uniwersytecie, i właściwa prawdziwym intelektualistom, bowiem – oprócz rozległej wiedzy – powinno ich charakteryzować wątpienie; wątpienie w opinie, odpowiedzi, przekonania, a nawet w język. Głównym celem wyższej edukacji, jak pisał Rorty, jest kształtowanie intelektualistów, nie zaś specjalistów czy tzw. fachowców. Autorka artykułu wskazuje mocne strony tej ciekawej i aktualnej także w polskim środowisku akademickim idei, ale również jej słabości, niekoherencje czy wreszcie miejsca najbardziej kontrowersyjne, wpisując się w debatę nad ogólną kondycją dzisiejszych uniwersytetów i ich perspektywach.
The article "Spirits of the University according to Richard Rorty" presents Rorty’s idea concerning his vision of modern university. Rorty refers to the thought of Socrates and Plato, emphasising that while both founded “liberated” education, their ways of thinking were completely different. The American pragmatist is of the opinion that Socratic philosophy should constitute higher education in universities and colleges. As opposed to Plato, Socrates believed that there is no unambiguous, absolute truth. Rorty holds that this remains the best method in the present day, because it creates real intellectualists. The major feature characterising the Intellectualist, apart from intimate knowledge of different disciplines, is doubting – they should doubt opinions, answers, beliefs, even the language which they use. Producing this kind of university graduate should be principal aim of higher education. In Rorty’s opinion, universities ought to educate intellectualists, not professionals or specialists. The article aims to indicate the strengths, weaknesses and controversial aspects of this very interesting and current (also in Polish academic world) idea and finally to think over the condition of universities and its perspectives for the future.
