‘The Augustinians’ sermons’. Between gloss and text
Abstract
Celem pracy jest charakterystyka specyfiki Kazań augustiańskich (przede wszystkim ich języka), średniowiecznego polsko-łacińskiego tekstu, który został zapisany na marginesach i w interliniach jako adaptacja łacińskich materiałów kaznodziejskich przeznaczonych na 21. niedzielę po Zesłaniu Ducha św. Jest on wyjątkowy ze względu na sposób zapisania oraz funkcjonowania dopisków na karcie (są pomiędzy glosą a tekstem, wchodzą w wielopoziomowe relacje z tekstem głównym), obecność bezpośredniej podstawy łacińskiej, a także niespotykaną w pozostałych zabytkach staropolskich dwujęzyczność polsko-łacińską widoczną nie tylko w obrębie większych fragmentów tekstu, ale także poszczególnych konstrukcji czy nawet pojedynczych słów.
W pracy szczegółowej analizie poddane zostały: kształt tekstu (ustalenie podstawy materiałowej), jego dwujęzyczność, relacja wobec tekstu łacińskiego (odrębność i zależność tekstów). Rozprawa zawiera również wszechstronny opis Kazań augustiańskich jako tekstu jakościowo odmiennego od podstawy (m.in. jego struktury retorycznej oraz użytych środków językowych) oraz edycję omawianej części zabytku.
Analizy pokazały, że Kazania augustiańskie dokumentują tę fazę wernakularyzacji języka polskiego, w której wernakularny (lub dwujęzyczny) tekst – choć wciąż jest pod wieloma względami zależny od łacińskiej podstawy (i nie zaistniałby bez niej) – w dużej mierze odrywa się od pierwowzoru.
The main purpose of this Ph.D. thesis is to characterise the language of the so-called Augustinians’ sermons, medieval Polish-Latin text which was written on the margins and in the interline spaces as an adaptation of Latin materials for preaching for 21st Sunday after Pentecost. For a number of reasons The Augustinians’ sermons are exceptional: due to its layout (being between gloss and text), a direct relationship with the main text, the presence of the base of the translation written down as the main text and the bilinguality of the text, unique as compared to other extant literary monuments of the Middle Ages in Poland. In the PhD thesis many problems are examined, such as a form of the text (layout), its bilingualism, relationship with the main text (and comparison with the main text), rhetorical framework and figures of speech in The Augustinians’ sermons. The last chapter contains the edition of a part of the analysed manuscript. Analysis show that The Augustinians’ sermons are a good example of this stage of vernacularisation of the Polish language, when the text, still remaining in a direct relationship with the Latin source, starts to form an independent, different whole.
