The status of lexical oppositions of Old Polish in the Middle Polish era
Abstract
Celem niniejszej dysertacji jest próba ustalenia, na podstawie materiału zgromadzonego w Słowniku polszczyzny XVI wieku oraz Słowniku języka polskiego XVII i 1. połowy XVIII wieku, jaki był status wywodzących się ze staropolszczyzny jednostek wyrazowych, wyodrębnionych w toku dyskusji o pochodzeniu polskiego języka literackiego jako cechy dyferencjujące polski obszar językowy, w języku literackim doby średniopolskiej. Czyli na ile, i czy w ogóle, regionalne właściwości wyrazowe pojawiające się w dyskusji nad pochodzeniem polszczyzny literackiej są rzeczywistymi cechami dyferencjalnymi, na ile zaś cechy te, zwiększając swoje zasięgi terytorialne, stały się w dobie średniopolskiej właściwościami regionalnymi wynikającymi tylko z częstości użycia. Weryfikacja taka będzie także próbą ustalenia, jakie inne, pozageograficzne czynniki warunkowały szesnasto- i siedemnastowieczną ich wariancję. Tym samym przedstawione zagadnienie łączy się z problemem wariantywności polszczyzny literackiej w okresie jej krzepnięcia.
Based on the lexical material collected from ‘Dictionary of 16th century Polish’ and ‘Dictionary of 17th and the first half of 18th century Polish’, the main aim of the dissertation is to answer the question what was the status of lexical oppositions of Old Polish in texts of Middle Polish era. The lexical oppositions were used as arguments in the discussion revolving around the origins and dialectal bases of the Polish literary language. The elements of lexical oppositions divided medieval Polish state into several regions. That is to say, to what degree, if any, the regional word properties adduced in the discussion, were true differential regionalism, and to what degree, by increasing their territorial reach, they became in the beginning of the Middle Polish era regional properties only due to their frequency of use. The question arises what happened with these elements in the Polish language of the following centuries: 1) whether they still divided Polish language territory; 2) whether they became the elements (by increasing geographical extent) which are known on the whole Polish language territory but diversify this territory according to their frequency; 3) or if perhaps some of them simply did not exist in this period. This verification is also an attempt to answer the question what other factors, not geographical, made variances in Middle Polish (for instance social or stylistic).
