The relationships between cultures in the presence of Feliks Koneczny’s and Samuel P. Huntington’s these about civilizational conflict

Abstract

Dissertation deals with relationships between cultures and civilizations, which are the subject of two theories of plurality of civilizations: one by Polish historian Feliks Koneczny and the other by American political scientist Samuel P. Huntington. Chapter I presents the most important senses of civilization idea. Chapter II concentrates on different relationships between cultures: tolerance and conflict. Chapter III presents Koneczny’s concept. In his theory, civilization is a “mode of organizing collective life”. It is simply a manner of organizing human life, that allows it to develop harmoniously and peacefully. Chapter IV serves outlines Huntington’s perspective of the central problem of thesis. In his theory, civilization is the largest cultural unit and the highest level attainable by a group of people and the broadest sphere of cultural identity. For Huntington culture and cultural identity are the identity of civilization. Chapter V compares both theories. Huntington’s concept of “conflict as a universal phenomenon” is similar to Koneczny’s view: “when two civilizations come into contact with one another a struggle between them has to arise even if unconsciously at first”. All flourishing civilizations are aggressive and always try to impose themselves on others. This activity is never interrupted, not even when relationships are completely peaceful and friendly.
