Jak wytwarzany jest slums? Studium przypadku mieszkańców Kibery i Korogocho w Nairobi

Abstract

W dysertacji autorka odpowiada na pytanie, jak wytwarzany jest współczesny slums i jak funkcjonuje jako zjawisko społeczno-kulturowe (w realiach Kenii). W analizie odnosi się do literatury przedmiotu i danych etnograficznych z własnych, 20. miesięcznych antropologicznych badań terenowych, w slumsach Kibera i Korogocho (dzielnice Nairobii). Wytwarzanie slumsu to splot globalnych i lokalnych praktyk w tym dyskursów w silnie zaludnionym miejscu, podejmowanych w historycznej, kulturowej, politycznej i ekonomicznej sieci zależności. Poza wprowadzeniem i zakończeniem, praca ma 2 części. W pierwszej ukazano praktyki i idee, dzięki którym pojawiły się warunki slumsów i ich relatywnie ustabilizowana struktura: (1) historię powstania Kibery i Korogocho jako fizycznych i różniących się przestrzeni; (2) ich usankcjonowanie jako slumsów przez nomenklaturę; (3) budowanie identyfikacji tych miejsc i ich mieszkańców. Część druga ilustruje nieoczywiste praktyki życia codziennego mieszkańców, przez które owa stabilna struktura slumsu jest (re)produkowana, zmieniania, aby móc (prze)trwać, co dotyczy: (4) tworzenia infrastruktury materialnej; (5) strategii zarabiania; (6) działań rozumianych przez jako „pomoc” oraz (7) linczy na złodziejach. Każdy z rozdziałów prowadzi do nowych interpretacji praktyk mieszkańców, a ostatecznie, tego czym jest slums.

In her dissertation, the author focuses on how present-day slums are generated and how they function as a sociocultural phenomenon (in Kenyan reality). In her analysis, she refers to subject literature and ethnographic data from her own, 20-month anthropological field research in Kibera and Korogocho slums (districts of Nairobi). Slum generation is a combination of global and local practices, including discourses, in a densely populated place, undertaken within a historical, cultural, political and economical web of interdependencies. Apart from the introduction and conclusion, the work consists of 2 sections. The first presents practices and ideas which enabled conditions conducive to the creation of slums and their relatively stable structure to appear: (1) the history of the generation of Kibera and Korogocho as physical spaces different from the rest of Nairobi; (2) their sanctioning as slums via nomenclature; and (3) constructing the identity of these places and their inhabitants. The second section illustrates the not necessarily obvious everyday practices of slum inhabitants through which this stable structure is (re)generated and changed so that it can survive and last, including: (4) creating a material infrastructure; (5) earning strategies; (6) activities understood as “aid”; and (7) thief lynchings. Each subsection leads to new interpretations of slum inhabitants’ practices and, ultimately, of the slum itself.
