Democratization of Contemporary Culture

Abstract

Praca służy przedstawieniu i diagnozie procesu demokratyzacji kultury współczesnej. W pierwszym podjęto kwestie dotyczące teorii polityki, by przejść następnie do rozważań antropologicznych uzupełniających szkicowaną teorię demokracji. W drugim przedstawiono przekształcenia zachodzące w obrębie edukacji i koncepcji pedagogicznych. W trzecim poddano analizie dyskusje wyrosłe na gruncie filozofii nauki; uszczegółowienie stanowi studium poświęcone historiografii. W czwartym uwagę skupiono na sztuce współczesnej i jej związkach z demokracją; szczegółowe studium przypadku stanowi analiza slamu poetyckiego. Z jednej strony praca przedstawia w jaki sposób nauka staje się polem ustalania sensów demokracji. Nauka zatem zostaje ukazana jako dziedzina kultury, tworząca i odzwierciedlająca zjawisko demokratyzacji. Z drugiej strony praca przedstawia praktyki mogące na proces demokratyzacji wskazywać i go ustanawiać.
The work aims at the presentation and diagnosis of the democratization process in contemporary culture. To be more exact, it reveals the debate on the very changeable meanings of the notion of democracy, which affects possible concepts of democratization itself. The accepted concept of democracy that emerges in the discussion is unique for its openness, and it therefore allows for inclusion a game between such values as: choice, a people, equality, liberty, plurality, and difference, which themselves are half-open and ready to be fed with content generated in intellectual and practical debates. Such an approach to democracy enables the author to pose the question „how is democracy used?” rather than “what is democracy?” The work is subdivided into four chapters. The first chapter deals with the issues of political theory to be followed by anthropological considerations aiming at supplementation of the theory of democracy accepted and discussed in the work. The second chapter focuses on the changes in education and pedagogical concepts which could be of interest for the problem the author studies in the work. The third chapter includes the analysis of respective discussions within the philosophy of science; the details of the analysis are found in the section devoted to historiography. In the last chapter, the author’s attention concentrates on contemporary art and its relations with democracy; empirical data to illustrate the problem were collected during a thorough case study of poetry slam. Thus, on the one hand, the work shows how science becomes the field in which the meanings of democracy are established, and in this context, science is presented as this sphere of culture where democratization is created and expressed. On the other hand, the work shows practices which could indicate and set the process of democratization. Therefore, social actors who undertake active strategies in some definite areas become interesting objects of scientific investigation. Therefore, the analysis in the whole work walks a fine line between socio-cultural processes expressed in theoretical discourses and socio-cultural experiencing of these processes in specific human actions.
