Against illness. Theory and practice of hospital architecture in Wielkopolska1919-1939
Abstract
Przedmiotem pracy jest teoria i praktyka architektury szpitalnej na terenie Wielkopolski w latach międzywojennych. Pojęcie szpitali jest tu rozumiane w szerokim zakresie jako: sanatoria przeciwgruźlicze i obiekty uzdrowiskowe, szpitale ogólne i specjalistyczne oraz zakłady psychiatryczne. W ramach trzech części dysertacji, poświęconych poszczególnym typom budowlanym, omówione zostały zarówno obiekty XIX-wieczne, modernizowane w latach międzywojennych, jak i te powstałe od podstaw oraz projekty niezrealizowane. Głównym celem pracy było skonfrontowanie ówczesnych postulatów formułowanych przez środowiska lekarzy i architektów, dotyczących zasad budowy szpitali, z konkretnymi projektami oraz realizacjami. W tych ramach ważne miejsce zajmował problem interakcji między dziedzinami medycyny i architektury. Uwzględniane w budynkach międzywojennych szpitali idee racjonalnego kształtowania przestrzeni, wynikające z haseł modernizmu, wyraźnie współgrały bowiem z wytycznymi terapii. Przedstawione w pracy analizy dotyczą nie tylko samej architektury, ale uwzględniają także różnorodne aspekty jej funkcjonowania z perspektywy różnych grup użytkowników: pacjentów, lekarzy oraz pielęgniarek. Część tekstową uzupełnia tom ilustracyjny, prezentujący plany obiektów oraz dawne i współczesne zdjęcia.
The main subject of the dissertation is theory and practice of hospital architecture in Wielkopolska during interwar period. The notion of the hospital is considered here in a wide spectrum as: tuberculosis sanatoria and health resort buildings, general and specialist hospitals, and asylums. In three parts of the dissertation which refer to particular building types, 19th century buildings, buildings modernised during interwar period as well as not realised projects are discussed. The main aim of the dissertation was to confront the then principles of hospital building, formulated by doctors and architects, with projects and building objects. The ideas of rational space design, characteristic for modernism, clearly harmonised in hospitals with the needs of medical therapy. Analysis presented in the dissertation concern not only the architecture itself, but also takes into consideration various aspects of its use by several groups: patients, doctors and nurses. The text part is complemented by volume with illustrations, depicting building plans and also past and contemporary photos.
