Cultural creation of time and sprace. Analysis of medieval and early renaissance castle architecture in Ireland
Abstract
Głównym przedmiotem zainteresowań mojej rozprawy doktorskiej jest społeczno-kulturowa interpretacja czasoprzestrzeni architektonicznej wybranych przykładów zamków irlandzkich. Moje rozważania dotyczą też refleksji nad tym jak uprawiana jest archeologia i jak archeolodzy myślą o przeszłości, czasie i przestrzeni.
Pierwszy człon pracy jest swego rodzaju deklaracją poglądów. Mówię w nim o tym, czym jest dla mnie przeszłość, pamięć, tradycja, społeczeństwo czy wreszcie wszechobecna i pełna dialektyki czasoprzestrzeń kulturowa. Nie bez znaczenia dla tej kwestii jest także język i narracja oraz sposób, w jaki tworzymy związki logiczne.
Zagadnienia związane ze społecznym funkcjonowaniem irlandzkiej elitarnej architektury obronnej i mieszkalnej były pretekstem do sprawdzenia, na ile zadeklarowane wcześniej poglądy i kategorie konceptualne mogą być odnoszone do materiału źródłowego. Zamek miał być dla arystokracji przestrzenią „bezpieczną”. Jego struktura architektoniczna nastawiona była na konfrontację. W grubych murach krył się nie tylko sen o potędze, ale także lęk przed poddanymi.
Inność średniowiecznego świata, inność jego architektury uświadamia nam kulturowy charakter rzeczywistości. Z o wiele większą łatwością pytamy o obcą dla nas kulturę niż o naszą własną. Dopiero próba zrozumienia i oswojenia inności pozwala nam zrozumieć jak kształtujemy naszą własną rzeczywistość.
The main goal of my PhD thesis is a socio-cultural interpretation of architectural space in medieval Irish castles. I also discuss the way archaeologists think and write about the past. The main sources for my research are examples of elite architecture in Ireland. The most important research issue concerns the meaning of architectural space in castles. It involves the questions: How did the architecture reflect the social status of its inhabitants? In what ways might the arrangement of the interior have influenced social practice? What was the perception of elite architecture in non elite groups of contemporary society? The cultural creation of architectural time and space is related to social order and group identity. There are approximately 3,500 castles surviving to the present day. Numerous and constant wars between the Anglo-Norman aristocracy and the indigenous Gaelic Chieftains led to social unrest and anxiety. It was also one of the main reasons for the rapid development of castles. The history of architecture can be considered as a history of human society. Changes of style and design are in fact often related to social conflict – conflict which not only gives impetus to the development of the art, but which can also be destructive. Irish castles are evidence of such a conflict.
