Metaphoric Imagination and its Manifestations in Musical Thought and Output. The Ideas of Pierre Schaeffer, Raymond Murray Schafer and Gérard Grisey.
Abstract
The dissertation makes a contribution to the musicological research on metaphor. Its point is to analyze the concept of metaphoric imagination in the context of twentieth-century theories of metaphor applied to musicology and to reveal the aspects of such imagination in the ideas of twentieth-century composers: Pierre Schaeffer, Raymond Murray Schafer and Gérard Grisey. The first chapter consists of the chronological review of metaphor theories developed as a part of philosophy, aesthetics, poetics and linguistics. The most important problems concerning metaphor in musicology, such as the status of music theory and musical analysis, musical meaning and expression, musical space and movement, are defined in the second chapter. The analysis of the composers’ treatises and opinions comprised in the third chapter enabled the author to characterize the metaphors which influenced their creative imagination and aesthetic approach. The ideas of the artists are focused on the particular metaphors: of the sonorous object (Schaeffer), the soundscape (Schafer) and the sound organism (Grisey). The last chapter includes the analysis of the chosen works. Conclusions drawn from the comparative analysis of the three ideas may serve as an essential contribution to the flourishing research into metaphor and can also provide the new devices in the research on contemporary music.
