Limit experience as a philosophical issue
Abstract
Celem rozprawy jest próba analizy specyfiki doświadczenia granicznego w oparciu o metafizykę granicy Karla Jaspersa oraz jego systematykę bytu wyrażoną w koncepcji periechontologii. Jest to próba poszerzonego ujęcia kategorii sytuacji granicznej wobec konsekwencji filozoficznych, jakie można wyprowadzić z Jaspersowkiej filozofii bytu. Rozdział I przedstawia wybrane historyczne próby ujęcia problemu doświadczenia granicznego w filozofii. Rozdział II przybliża interpretację filozofii bytu Jaspersa jako metafizyki granicy, stanowiąc podstawę metodologiczną rozprawy. W rozdziale III prezentowana jest teoria doświadczenia granicznego, uwzględniająca analizę wyróżniających go cech, jego strukturę, wskazanie rodzajów, konsekwencji egzystencjalnych, a także zagadnienie jego komunikowalności. W rozdziałach IV i V przywołane zostają przykłady faktycznych przejawów egzystencjalnych doświadczeń granicznych uporządkowanych według poziomów bytowych wyróżnionych przez Jaspersa – Istnienia, Ducha, Intelektu i Egzystencji. Rozdział VI poświęcony jest natomiast ujęciu doświadczenia granicznego w wybranej perspektywie etycznej. W pracy staram się dowieść, że każde doświadczenie graniczne odnosi się do doświadczenia, jakie staje się udziałem egzystencji zapytującej o byt sam, egzystencji, która nieustannie zadając pytanie o podstawę bytu napotyka na horyzont – granicę.
The aim of the thesis is to try to analyze the specific nature of the limit experience on the basis of Karl Jaspers’ metaphysics of the border, as well as his systematics of the being which is expressed through the concept of periechonthology. It is also an attempt to interpret the category of the limit situation in the presence of philosophical consequences that can be drawn from Jaspers’ philosophy of being. Chapter I presents chosen historical attempts of interpreting the issue of limit experience in philosophy. Chapter II shows the interpretation of Karl Jaspers’ philosophy of being as the metaphysics of the border, which makes for the methodological basis of the thesis. Chapter III consists of the theory of the limit experience, an analysis of its distinctive features, its structure, pointing to its different types, existential consequences, as well as the issue of its communicability. Chapters IV and V present examples of actual expressions of existential limit experiences, arranged according to the levels of being distinguished by Jaspers – existence, spirit, consciousness-as-such and Existenz. Chapter VI is devoted to the presentation of the limit experience in a chosen ethical perspective. In this thesis I am trying to prove that every limit experience refers to the experience that becomes part of the existence that asks about the being-in-itself, existence which unceasingly asking a question about the grounds of being faces the horizon – the border.
