An Appeal for More Research on Individual Language Guidance
(Wydawnictwo Naukowe UAM, 2013) Kij, Karolina; Skowronek, Barbara
Although it constitutes a quite popular and effective system of foreign language teaching/learning, language tutoring seems to be disregarded in academic work as well as in teaching materials. Yet, a specific structure of tutoring offers an attractive field for the research that cannot be conducted in the context of group learning. Results of the research could not only enhance the current state of glottodidactic knowledge, but also extend the ethodological base, in which it is now futile to search for instruction on the individual work with the learner. The present article is thus an attempt to begin an academic discussion concerning language tutoring.

The role of a teacher in a CLIL classroom
(Wydawnictwo Naukowe UAM, 2013) Papaja, Katarzyna; Skowronek, Barbara
CLIL classrooms are not typical language classrooms due to the fact that language is the medium through which content is “transported”. Non-linguistic content is used to teach a language and learners acquire new knowledge but in a foreign language. The following paper provides an outline of research on the role of a teacher in a CLIL classroom. Starting with a brief insight into the phenomenon of CLIL, and a general overview of the qualitative studies based on observations, questionnaires and interviews, the article focuses particularly on the main features of a CLIL teacher.

Approaches to describing and analyzing classroom communication
(Wydawnictwo Naukowe UAM, 2013) Aleksandrzak, Magdalena; Skowronek, Barbara
The article discusses some selected approaches to classroom communication and addresses the problem of its authenticity. The complexity of the subject, together with the multiplicity of the models, interpretations and research methodologies used in the process of data collection and analysis contribute to the fact that classroom discourse is generally regarded as a problematic and demanding research area which requires a multi-dimensional approach and a well-grounded choice of analytic framework.

Falsche Freunde - ein Hindernis im Fremdsprachenlernprozess nur in der Theorie oder auch in Praxis?
(Wydawnictwo Naukowe UAM, 2013) Kosturek, Kamila; Skowronek, Barbara
This article discuses the results of a questionnaire on English-German false-friend pairs, carried out among four groups of respondents. The first three groups included Polish students of German and English Studies at the University of Rzeszow, while the last one consisted of native speakers of German. The respondents stated that their knowledge of false friends in both languages was good or even profound, however, the results obtained in the practical part of the questionnaire seemed to diverge from their declared knowledge. This suggests the need to pay greater attention to the phenomenon of false friends in foreign language teaching.

    Zum Wesen der Übersetzungseinheit
(Wydawnictwo Naukowe UAM, 2013) Jopkiewicz, Katarzyna; Skowronek, Barbara
The questions of a translation unit, its dimensions and natural features have absorbed the traductologists since the origins of translatology. According to this, the primary purpose of this paper is to establish the range of the most important defining propositions and further to consider the issue, whether a translation unit should be in fact understood as a word, a phrase, a sentence, a text, culture or a variable entity. The approach will put forward the claim that it is necessary to differentiate between the unit of translation and the unit of translating, and that the appropriate text type particularly determines the dimensions of the unit of translating.

Medium, Performanz, Inhalt: Eine theoretische Metastudie zum mediengestützten Lernen
(Wydawnictwo Naukowe UAM, 2013) Giessen, Hans; Skowronek, Barbara
Media-based learning does not necessarily make sense nor is it necessarily effective, for that matter, simply because it uses a medium. Rather, there are several variables that can and do influence its success: the very medium, the content, and the learner’s cognitive styles. All variables have to be taken into consideration, alone and interacting, in order to decide whether and where media-based learning is to be used, and where it might be counterproductive.

Der „kommunikative Raum“ in der kulturologischen (Un)Höflichkeitsforschung
(Wydawnictwo Naukowe UAM, 2013) Bonacchi, Silvia; Skowronek, Barbara
The paper attempts to define the term "communicative space” for (im)politeness research. “Communicative space” is a crucial notion for the definition of concepts such as “ritual balance”, “discursive rule”, “discursive position”, “territoriality”, “field of action” and “co-construction of communicative interaction” (Jacoby, Ochs 1995). “Communicative space” cannot be reduced to the mere physical space in which an (im)polite communicative interaction takes place (“transactional space” according to Kendon 1990). It is a mental space, which is “co-constructed” in so far as it is the result of the convergence of the mental worlds of interactants mediated by utterences. In this sense it can be defined as a “phenomenal space” which is ruled by structuring principles and field laws. The capacity of creating convergent communicative spaces is a key competence which lays the foundations for dialogue capacity and permits successful communicative interactions; therefore it is defined as a very important educational goal in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (2001).

DaF in der Welt: Warum es sich heute noch mehr lohnt, Deutsch zu lernen
(Wydawnictwo Naukowe UAM, 2013) Hepp, Marianne; Skowronek, Barbara
Despite everything that is said and can be read currently on the news, the global amount of learners of German has not dramatically decreased in the last three decades. As a general fact, it actually has remained constant, while in some places, especially in the last few months, it has increased significantly. Nevertheless, learning German is a changing reality, its main fluctuations depending mostly on geographical and institutional factors at the educational level. In order to keep German attractive in our multilingual society, new teaching and learning concepts must be profiled, which can make foreign language acquisition suitable to a context of modern language polyphony. In any case, to learn German pays more today than ever before.
