Abstract

The paper offers deliberations concerning the eternal (continual) existence of God. At the outset, the author discusses the influence of Revelation described in the books of the Old Covenant on classical philosophy. There is a widely known claim that the vision of biblical God contributed to the rejection of the Greek assumption stating material nature of ontological foundation - the absolute and to the replacement of the latter with the concept of personal God. The most important section of the paper is the attempt to determine the ontological significance of the vision of God emerging from the descriptions in the New Testament. The author presents an interpretation of selected fragments of the New Testament which encourage one to adopt a thesis that God is an entity that existed since eternity but will not last into eternity. In other words, God sacrificed his existence entirely and does not exist at present. In this perspective, the New Testament proves to be a description which overcomes one of the fundamental premises of classical ontology (and later Christian philosophy) stating that the ontological foundation is eternal. The above interpretation is supported by author’s reasoning, denoted as the “mercy-based proof of the current non-existence of God”. In the final part of the paper, the author analyses the notion of the “necessity of God’s existence”. As a result, the author advances a thesis that the notion does not exclude the concept of God who renounces his existence.
