This dissertation concerns discovering of scientific knowledge by application of modeling and computational tools in three subdisciplines of cognitive science. These disciplines are human timing, abduction, and question processing. The studies presented in this thesis encompass modeling of human intervals comparison process in artificial neural networks, and computational experiments concerning automated generation of abductive hypotheses and erotetic search scenarios. The main achievements of this dissertation are: a model of human intervals comparison process enabling generation of advanced conclusions and predictions by performing simulation experiments; implementation and development of a procedure generating abductive hypotheses; discovery and analysis of complex patterns in the obtained set of generated abductive hypotheses; implementation and development of a procedure generating erotetic search scenarios; discovery and analysis of patterns in the obtained set of erotetic search scenarios. The value of the presented research, apart from the knowledge obtained, lies in an introduction of a repertoire of methods that can be further easily applied to solve new complex problems.</mods:abstract>
