Dlatego można powiedzieć, że sakrament ten jest najbardziej osobistym sakramentem, ponieważ w nim grzesznik staje przed Bogiem w postawie żalu i ufności, ale również z programem realizacji swego powołania do świętości. U kratek konfesjonału z pomocą łaski Bożej oraz kompetentnego spowiednika dokonuje się dzieło formacji sumienia penitenta. A z kolei dobrze uformowane sumienie stanowi wydatną pomoc na drodze do świętości penitenta. Aby jednak ten cel formacyjny został osiągnięty, penitent musi się właściwie do sakramentu pokuty przygotować. Nie ulega wątpliwości, że w tym przygotowaniu każdy z warunków sakramentu pokuty odgrywa istotną rolę, z żalem za grzechy na czele. Autor jednak w niniejszym opracowaniu ukazuje przede wszystkim rolę rachunku sumienia oraz sam moment spowiedzi – a w nim także zaangażowanie spowiednika – dla formacyjnej wartości sakramentu pokuty. Bowiem, by sakrament ten mógł spełniać w życiu penitenta swą ważną formacyjną rolę w sposób właściwy, potrzebny jest do tego wysiłek zarówno penitenta, jak i spowiednika.The essential element of the sacrament of penance is renewed responsibility for ourselves and others. This sacrament is the most personal of sacraments because the sinner comes before God with regret and at the same time with thrust, and also with a program of his own sanctification. In order to achieve this goal the penitent has to prepare himself properly. Without doubt in this preparation each condition of the sacrament of penance plays an essential role but priority should be given to regret. In this article the author underscores the role of the examination of conscience and the moment of confession. Special attention is drawn to the role of the confessor in the formative value of the sacrament of penance. The source of the formative value of the sacrament of penance consists in the fact that it always puts a person's entire life history in God's light.
