RELIGIOUS SYMBOLS AS AN ARSENAL OF CONTEMPORARY ART The iconographic spectrum of symbols that has emerged for the last two thousand years of Christianity cannot be labeled as copyright. Their intersubjective character and their potential of mean-ing make the symbols detached from their original contexts and enter the repertoire of art and pop culture. Does that lead to the tabloidization and slow erosion of religious symbols? Very similar me-chanisms based on provocation, citation and pastiche function both in banal pop culture and in engaged social campaigns and art. However, what is different are the contexts of these provocations and, by the same token, more or less allergic reactions to them. Artists’ actions on the tissue of the sacrum are not meant to attack religion, but to provoke a discussion on its condition. Thus art refers to cultural discourse generated by religious practices.plMiędzy ikonoklazmem i ikonofilią. Symbole religijne jako arsenał sztuki współczesnejArtykuł
