Tadeusz z Warszawy z r. 1803. Powieść ta jest romansem traktującym o fikcyjnej postaci Tadeuszu Sobieskim, która wzorowana jest na Tadeuszu Kościuszce. Porter w swoim romansie, który nigdy nie doczekał się tłumaczenia na język polski, przedstawia brutalny los Rzeczypospolitej podczas zaborów (tom pierwszy) oraz perypetie Tadeusza Sobieskiego jako imigranta w Londynie (pozostałe trzy). Dzięki takiemu zabiegowi Porter porównuje idealnego wręcz Polaka z angielską/brytyjską arystokracją i ukazuje swoim rodakom jaką powinno się przyjąć postawę w obliczu zagrożenia. W mojej pracy próbuję rzucić nowe światło na wagę stosunków polsko-brytyjskich na podst. książki Porter. Ukazuję na przykład jakie stereotypy panowały wśród ówczesnych Brytyjczyków na tematy związane z Polską i z Polakami oraz jak miały się one do rzeczywistości. Przedstawiam także „kulisy” produkcji Tadeusza z Warszawy i krótką biografię brytyjskiej autorki oraz wspaniałe przyjęcie Porter i jej dokonania literackiego na Wyspach 200 lat temu. Ponadto, ponieważ Porter i jej dzieło ulegli zapomnieniu, moja dysertacja jest hołdem złożonym osobie, która swoim piórem naświetliła sprawę zamordowanej Polski.The work is dedicated to the British author Jane Porter and her four-volume novel Thaddeus of Warsaw, written in 1803. The novel is a romance dealing with a fictitious Polish patriot Thaddeus Sobieski, who is in fact modelled on Tadeusz Kościuszko. Porter in her romance, which has never been translated into Polish, presents the brutal fate of the Polish Commonwealth during the Partitions (the first volume) and the adventures of Thaddeus Sobieski as an immigrant in London (the remaining three). Thanks to this manoeuvre, Porter compares the near-to-spotless Pole with the English/British aristocracy and shows her fellow countrymen how one ought to act in the face of danger. My dissertation tries to shed a new light on the depth of Polish-British cultural links on the basis of Porter’s work, for example some of the stereotypes of the then British about Poland and her citizens versus the reality. The study also shows the “behind the scenes” of producing Thaddeus of Warsaw and Porter’s life and the magnificent reception of the author and her book 200 years ago on the Isles. Finally, since currently little is known about Porter and her work in both Poland and Britain, my thesis is a tribute to the person whose creation highlighted the Polish cause after Poland had been murdered.enTadeusz z WarszawyJane PorterLaskowskiDysertacja
