Punktem wyjścia pracy jest próba wyjaśnienia kluczowych dla niej pojęć, takich jak: subkultura, kontrkultura i kontestacja oraz teoretyczne rozważania nad socjalizacyjną rolą subkultur. Następnie przedstawiono społeczno-kulturowe, ekonomiczne i polityczne konteksty rozwoju kontrkultury, a zarazem subkultury hipisów. W trzecim rozdziale pracy zaprezentowano historię rozwoju ruchu hipisowskiego, uwzględniając amerykańskie subkultury lat 50-tych, będące protoplastami hipisów. W części tej przywołano klasyfikacje uczestników subkultury hipisów oraz indywidualne życiorysy najbardziej znanych jej reprezentantów. Poruszono również ważny wątek studenckich protestów na amerykańskich uczelniach w latach 60-tych. W ostatnim rozdziale dokonano analizy socjalizacyjnej funkcji hipisowskiej subkultury, przedstawiając ideologię ruchu oraz sposób funkcjonowania społeczności tworzonych przez hipisów, tak zwanych komun. Szczególną uwagę poświęcono sytuacji wzrastających i wychowujących się w komunach dzieci. Ponadto zaprezentowano przykłady amerykańskich szkół, funkcjonujących w duchu omawianej subkultury oraz ukazano, w jaki sposób kontrkulturowa myśl zainspirowała rozwój edukacji alternatywnej.The doctoral dissertation presents the American hippie subculture. The starting point of the work is an attempt to explain key concepts such as subculture, counterculture and contestation, as well as theoretical considerations on the socializing role of subcultures. Next, sociocultural, economic and political contexts of the development of the counterculture and at the same time the hippie subculture were presented. The third chapter of the work presents the history of the hippie movement, including the American subcultures of the 50s, which were the ancestors of hippies. In this part, the classifications of the participants of the hippie subculture and individual biographies of its most famous representatives were recalled. An important topic of student protests at American universities in the 60s was also raised. The last chapter analyzes the socialization function of the hippie subculture, presenting the ideology of the movement and the way of functioning of communities created by hippies, the so-called communes. Particular attention was paid to the situation of children growing up in communes.
