Class Situation in Chilean Reality 1955 - 1965
Abstract
This article approaches the problem of the delimitation of the principal
categories of class positions in Chile, from a marxist point of view. As an aproximation
to the problem, three theories that deny the fully capitalistic character
of Latin America, those of "modernity", "structural dualism", and "social marginality"
are rejected by the author who adopts the conception of Chile as
a dependent society, but in a more specific form, i.e., as a capitalist society
subjected to imperialism.
Several empirical facts in the Chilean economy are examined, which confirm
not only that society is subjected to imperialism, but also that it is monopolistic
and oligarchic one, in which the State has a noticeable role in economic
life. Some aspects of social relations in the countryside are shown as not purely
capitalistic, but operating in a capitalist framework of economic relations. In any
case they cannot be characterized as "feudal".
Next, a general categorization that combines the different dimensions of classes
in Chile is presented.
Finally, some theoretical comments about the nature of the different criterio
employed in the categorization are made, which specify the marxist approach
according to the features of Chilean society analyzed in this article.
