The author defi nes mechanisms of repression and symbolic violence over the body of the Victorian upper-class woman, connected with the phenomenon of social control over the woman’s body and identity. The author assumes that the desire to achieve physical beauty has always been a source of a biographical experience that was constitutive for a woman, a source of a separate identity for her in comparison with a man. The historical changes of the ideals of the beautiful body are expressive of the complex interactions between the social roles of women and the dominant ideology of femininity as well as scientifi c and medical knowledge.Item Czerwony Kapturek. Kobiecość (nie)ujawniona – interpretacyjne prowokacje(Wydawnictwo Naukowe UAM, 2017) Gromkowska-Melosik, AgnieszkaThe author of the article reconstructs the various concepts of femininity in the fable Red Riding Hood. The main thesis is related to conviction that fables including Red Riding Hood are the fieldof specificcrystallization of culture uncertainity. In the case of Red Riding Hood competing interpretations of meanings are deconstructed. One can give here as an example the feminist understanding of Red Riding Hood, postmodern approach to this fascinating heroine and power girl related thinking, as well as psychoanalytic concepts. So in the seemingly naïve and banal fable various version of femininity and feminine sexuality can be discovered.Item Dystrybucja sukcesu edukacyjnego wśród kobiet i mężczyzn. Studium z pedagogiki porównawczej(Wydawnictwo Naukowe UAM, 2014) Gromkowska-Melosik, AgnieszkaIn contemprary societies, education is one of the most important foundations of the whole system of social stratification. Today, an inherent prerequisite for social advancement is educational “credential”, treated as symbolic manifestation of knowledge, skills, competencies , and mental characteristics (attributes of the “man of success”). There is no doubt can that in recent decades there has been a substantial increase in the educational aspirations of women. Howerer, many researches claim, that the women’s and men’s choices of fields of study contribute to the reproduction of gender inequality in society. On the other hand, the available data on the studying of women in the fields typical of male deny such conviction. In general one can even say that there is an educational marginalization of men in the field of higher educatrion and it is confirmed by statistical data. Analyses of data concerning access women and men to the higher education show, that there is a “demographically significant educational gap” in favor of women at this level of education and men are increasingly deprived of access.Item Editor’s Preface: Pandora’s box. Trudno temu zaprzeczać, jednakże wiele badań eksponuje fakt, że to szkoła średnia, a w szczególności liceum, jest decydująca (obok czynnika rodzinnego) w kształtowaniu kapitału kulturowego jednostki i jej „potencjału” społecznego. Trudno jest przecenić w tym zakresie, zarówno w kontekście historycznym, jak i współcześnie, rolę elitarnych szkół licealnych. Z ich absolwentów w praktyce tworzy się elita intelektualna danego społeczeństwa (i dotyczy to zarówno Polski, jak i krajów wysoko rozwiniętych oraz rozwijających się). Prezentowana książka to studium teoretyczno-empiryczne, podejmujące problem społecznych funkcji szkół elitarnych na poziomie szkolnictwa średniego, w kontekście konstruowania tożsamości absolwentów oraz dynamiki relacji między zjawiskiem reprodukcji kulturowej a ruchliwości społecznej. W pierwszej części przeprowadzono rekonstrukcje koncepcji i podejść odnoszących się do elitarnego szkolnictwa średniego. Część druga zawiera szczegółowe analizy studiów przypadku odnoszących się do Wielkiej Brytanii ze słynnym Eton College, Francji z niemalże arystokratycznym liceum Louis-le-Grand oraz systemem klas przygotowawczych, jak również Stanów Zjednoczonych, w których z uwagi na afirmatywne dążenia do demokratyzacji dostępu do wykształcenia paradoksy edukacji elitarnej na poziomie średnim są najbardziej widoczne. W części empirycznej przedstawione są wyniki, analizy i interpretacje badań, w których uczestniczyli uczniowie oraz absolwenci najbardziej elitarnych polskich liceów, zarówno tych, które posiadają wielowiekową tradycję, jak i tych, które wpisują się w neoliberalną koncepcję walki o sukces poprzez uzyskiwanie jak najlepszych wyników testów.Item Eton college. Szkic do portretu brytyjskiej elitarnej edukacji(Wydawnictwo Naukowe UAM, 2014) Gromkowska-Melosik, AgnieszkaThe article is devoted to the analysis of the social functions of the British public school Eton College, one of the most widely recognized elite schools in the world. Knowing the history of this school is necessary to understand not only the modern educational system of Great Britain, but also a number of social, economic, political, and cultural contexts of the country's development. Eton College is closely associated with the emergence of British civilization and British national identity, especially because boarding public schools such as Eton College not only play the educational role, but also create culture. According to many scholars of education, this college serves the upper class and the aristocracy, providing its graduates privileged access to university at a higher level (elite universities). Nowadays Eton College is still perceived as a bastion of reproduction of male elites.Item Feminizacja zawodu nauczycielskiego – „różowe kołnierzyki” i paradoksy rynku pracy(Wydawnictwo Naukowe UAM, 2013) Gromkowska-Melosik, AgnieszkaStatistical dominance of women in the teaching profession, particularly at the level of elementary education in almost every country of the world is a fact. The author in the article tries to fi nd the reasons for low status of this profession, at present and in historical context as well as and its social consequences. The feminization of teaching profession is considered taking into account two dimensions. First is purely statistical, referring to the absolute and the percentage of women in the teaching profession. Second one regarded as a sociological phenomenon with its implication to education. There are two possible approaches to the relationship between the feminization of the teaching profession and its place in the occupational stratifi cation, expressed e.g. in prestige and income. The fi rst results from the conviction that feminization of teaching profession is a consequence of its permanently weaker position in the occupational structure. This belief dominates many theoretical analyzes and also common sense of millions people. In the fi eld of academic discussion this approach is expressed by gender segregation and desegregation theory, and the inverted hierarchy mechanism theory. However, a closer analysis of this phenomenon makes possible to support radically different interpretation of this problem. So, proponents of the second approach argue that this is not the case that feminization of the teaching profession has brought its degradation. They are convinced that weak status of this profession in occupational structure is a consequence of its feminization. Growing number of women diminishes the attractiveness of this job. At he end of article author concludes that this context, generally the growth of women within this „pink-collar profession” is either a refl ection of its historically low prestige in the structure of employment or it is connected with the reduction of its prestige because of social or economical reasons.Item Gaokao i procesy stratyfikacji społecznej w Chinach(Wydawnictwo Naukowe UAM, 2017) Gromkowska-Melosik, AgnieszkaThis article concerns „gaokao” Chinese exams. I show how the „high stakes” tests (the essence of these exams) create the winners and losers in the battle for stratification success. They set up, as a one-time „selection act”, the trajectory of a career and the whole future life of young Chinese. At the same time, they are an example of the entanglement of the testing process in politics and of the enormous (and overwhelming) social pressure on young people.Item Globalne rankingi uniwersytetów i akademicka gra o status(Wydawnictwo Naukowe UAM, 2015) Gromkowska-Melosik, AgnieszkaNeoliberal struggle for social status and high financial rewards is also present in the field of education. My article is devoted to the problems of university rankings, which is also part of contemporary neoliberalism. I am convinced that rankings create to some extent contemporary academic reality. One can say that rankings dilute the traditional mission (and vision) of the university. Universities are treated as big companies, driven by success and profits. In the article the rankings issues are presented including the criticisms of their consequences.Item Globalne testy szkolne i ukryty program neoliberalnej kolonizacji(Wydawnictwo Naukowe UAM, 2016) Gromkowska-Melosik, AgnieszkaTests have influence on the phenomenon of stratification and selection of students, their lifestyle and way of thinking. Without a doubt, they have their hidden curriculum. At the micro level tests shape the identity of the individual. They are a factor of socialization. On the other hand, at the macro level tests are the significant instrument of educational policy governments. In my article I analyse the econd problem – in the context of international developments PISA tests, which are an instrument of neo-liberal policies of national governments, as well as the OECD. The tests are part of the abandonment of the idea of "equality in education" for the system market and competitiveness, in which education ceases to be a "public good" and becomes a "personal good." The essence of the hidden curriculum PISA test is the pursuit of homogenization student population living in culturally different countries as well as the shaping the attitudes of rivalry.Item Jednostka, neoliberalizm i redukcjonizm edukacji współczesnej(Wydawnictwo Naukowe UAM, 2016) Gromkowska-Melosik, AgnieszkaContemporary educational policy of many developed countries is permeated with the ideology of neoliberalism, the essence of which is to increase the efficiency and "focus on the best," while respecting the principle of indifference to sex, race or social origin. It is belevied that in neoliberalism, education - seen as the "good of the individual" is bringing economic benefits to society. Learning / knowledge becomes a commodity, an individual is treated in accordance with the logic of neoliberalism as "innovative entrepreneur", which determines his/her own success or failure. Here there is a dominance of rhetoric of performance, efficiency and standards together with conviction that schools should operate as excellent corporations that bring profits through routine activities, procedures, diagnosis and evaluation. In this context one can ask the question: is it still possible, to believe in emancipatory function of education?Item Kobiety „poza kontrolą”? – androcentryczne dyskursy w malarstwie wiktoriańskim (próba rekonstrukcji znaczeń)(Wydawnictwo Naukowe UAM, 2014) Gromkowska-Melosik, AgnieszkaFrom the perspective of feminist analysis, the painting is considered to be androcentric. It is believed that artworks were created by men, for men and from their point of view. One can even say that, men speak through the bodies and identities of heroine images in the painting. From this point of view, painting has been accused not only of the lack of women as authors of works of art, but also of the lack of representations of the female experience. Logically, from this perspective, images of women on the canvas are often not simple reflection of reality, but they crystallize dreams, anxieties and feelings of their male artists. There is no doubt that they are also imbued with ideologies concerning gender. Three images that will be examined in this paper were created in the Victorian era (the dates of their creation are: 1887, 1890, 1896). They all reflect anxieties about womanhood in the late nineteenth century, primarily manifested in the creation of a new image of a woman - the femme fatale. On the other hand, the women as objects of the painting are treated as a sexual object for male creator and viewer. Every woman in the paintings could be described as "being out of control". There is a paradox here: the woman is simultaneously out of control and controlled by men. It is worth it to add that every painting has an extremely suggestive impact on the viewer and amazing articstic value.Item Kontrowersje wokół kulturowych (re)adaptacji języka angielskiego – przykład Japonii(Wydawnictwo Naukowe UAM, 2017) Gromkowska-Melosik, AgnieszkaThe article is aimed at reconstructing the selected problems of English language adaptation in Japanese society. The author is convinced that there is a whole range of phenomena and paradoxes in Japan that fit perfectly the dilemma of cultural and national controversies around the English as a global language and around the concept of cultural imperialism. The main tension is connected with the fact that such societies as Japan want to keep their own mono-ethnicity and it is obvious that one of the most important components of it is native language treated as a form of embodiment of Japanese values and traditions. So, English is a threat to monolith of Japanese nation. On the other hand Japanese are aware that English helps their nation to rise the chance in global competition in global markets as well as it connects Japan to the world culture.Item Kopciuszek: zagubiony szklany pantofelek i metamorfozy kobiecości(Wydawnictwo Naukowe UAM, 2017) Gromkowska-Melosik, AgnieszkaThe article is devoted to the reconstruction of Cinderella myth in contemporary culture in the relation to the changing concepts of femininity. The Author takes into account several contexts of this issue. First, it can be understood in the terms of life as a lottery thanks to which in one moment a person is famous or rich (e.g. thanks to television success). Also, the author analyses the Cinderella in a light of sociological theory of competitive mobility. Besides sociotherapeutic Cinderella complex is analysed as well as feminist interpretation of Cinderella are reconstructed. The different versions of Cinderella fable are confronted with the various kinds of relations between women and men in contemporary. The Author takes into account several contexts of this issue. First, it can be understood in the terms of patriarchal power over women’s identity and body. Also, the author analyses the Snow White in a light of girl’s socialization into passive roles. In the article feminist interpretation of Snow White are also reconstructed. The different versions of Snow White fable are confronted with the various kinds of relations between women and men in contemporary society.Item Między asymilacją kulturową a pedagogiką różnicy. This problem applies in particular to the countries and societies with a traditionally diverse ethnic strucure, such as, for example, the United States, Canada or Australia. It is expected that in the near future – because of the influx of immigrants from the Third World to areas hitherto culturally homogeneous – this problem can become global. In this context, it is believed that the contextualization of the career of each person in its own cultural conditions of life and cultural identity is necessary. Logically, education of “multicultural counselors” should include: increasing intercultural awareness, extending the scope of knowledge concerning other cultures and the development of a “culturally sensitive competence”.Item Mniejszość muzułmańska w Szwecji: między ekstremistycznym(Wydawnictwo Naukowe UAM, 2013) Gromkowska-Melosik, AgnieszkaMy article's is aimed of analyzing the social construction of identity, using the category of difference, and taking into account the example Muslim Minority in Sweden. I try to understand the variety of social culture paradoxes in which the difference may be the starting point of emancipation or marginalization. I will focus in my text on the socio-cultural aspects of the Muslim minority functioning in Sweden and radical mutual non-translatability of basic assumptions of Muslim and Scandinavian culture. Radical Islamic politics of essentialism and full of contradictions Swedish integration policy brings in its overall consequences both political and religious emancipation of immigrants as well as their socio-cultural marginalization.Item Orientacja na testy w szkolnictwie współczesnym – kontrowersje ideologiczne i pedagogiczne(Wydawnictwo Naukowe UAM, 2015) Gromkowska-Melosik, AgnieszkaThe purpose of the article is reconstruction of the problem of ideological and social controversies surrounding the growing importance of the tests in determining the boundaries of contemporary neoliberal school reality. There is no doubt that in recent years the focus of the test-driven policies applied in the context of both formal and social criteria for evaluating students and schools has shifted decisively towards tangible results associated with the tests results. You can even tell that the phenomenon of "testing obsession" has dominated everyday life of the school and the identity of the students and has replaced student-centering learning. The author of the article considers these problems against the background of theory and reality.Item School and Cultural Assimilation: Dimensions of Assimilation Politics in Education(Peter Lang GmbH Internationaler Verlag der Wissenschaften, 2022) Drozdowicz, Jarema; Gromkowska-Melosik, Agnieszka; Hordecki, Bartosz; Szymczyński, TomaszIn this paper a crucial issue is being discussed which emerges in the context of progressing diversity of the schooling environment, as well the whole public sphere in general, i.e. cultural assimilation. This problem is to be addressed analytically through the means of pedagogical, socio- cultural and geopolitical discourse which prevails today in many Western countries and local debates on the nature of contemporary societies. Thus, we may look at the relation between schools and assimilation processes in its complexity and reveal how individuals objectified in those processes experience various assimilation policies. The politics of assimilation is however closely related to particular forms of shaping and understanding of the category of cultural difference. That link is being investigated in many of its manifestations. This paper takes also the aim to reconstruct the most significant tendencies in the politics of multiculturalism and to highlight the role of pedagogical and educational reflexivity in that regard. The necessity of an interdisciplinary approach is here taken as an important factor not just in the debate on contemporary state and philosophy of diversity, but furthermore – a specific signum temporis of modern educational studies.Item Seksualność kobieca w Pięćdziesięciu twarzach Greya. Powieściowa fikcja soft-porno czy kulturowe przesunięcie?(Wydział Studiów Edukacyjnych Uniwersytetu im. Adama Mickiewicza w Poznaniu, 2014) Gromkowska-Melosik, AgnieszkaThe purpose of my text is an attempt to define the context of the global fascination of super-bestseller, the book Fifty Shades of Grey – regardless of the fact that literary critics agreed that this is a novel very poor in every aspect. What makes this erotic-romantic story so exceptional, among others, to the extent that it meets with a huge “cultural vindictiveness”, entering into public discourse invasively, while hundreds of others – good or bad books are ignored? The main context of interest/fascination with the book Fifty Shades of Grey, in my opinion, is associated with putting again – and doing it radically – question about the permitted forms of female sexuality. Here we are dealing with a sudden shift – by the author – the debate in this area “a few miles ahead” and cancellation of several important tenets, including the dogma of women as innocent virgin, the dogma of women as mothers and wives but also feminist dogma of women socially and sexually liberated from the domination of men.
