Item Brunona Schulza gnostyczna mityzacja metafizyki(Wydawnictwo Naukowe Uniwersytetu im. Adama Mickiewicza, 2012) Jocz, ArturThe main aim of this article is to make an attempt at interpreting a meaning of reality which is reconstructed in the works of Bruno Schulz and which constitutes one of the many meanings of reality. This meaning reveals itself thanks to Schultz’s understanding of body, corporeality and materiality, which are categories that have appeared in European metaphysics for centuries. It seems that traces of Gnostic mythology can be found in this new metaphysics of corporeality.Item Ezoteryka a literatura. Geneza artystycznej fascynacji(Polskie Towarzystwo Religioznawcze, 2015) Jocz, ArturThe paper discusses the reception of Gnosticism among Polish romantic poets with specific reference to Zygmunt Krasiński (1812-1859). It analyses the esoteric/gnostic content of selected fragments of “The Unfinished Poem”. It should be remembered that Krasiński had never declared himself a gnostic. Thanks to this analysis, it will be possible to determine the role of esoteric/gnostic conceptual categories in the discussed work.Item Gnostyczne światy Brunona Schulza(Wydawnictwo Nauk Społecznych i Humanistycznych UAM, 2016) Jocz, ArturArtura Jocza od lat zajmują dwie kwestie: z jednej strony kategoria gnozy w myśli teologicznej, a z drugiej – literatura polska XIX i XX wieku. Item If Machines Want To Dream... Adam Wiśniewski-Snerg on the Ethical Consequences of There Being No Substantial Distinction Between Humans and Robots(Wydział Filozoficzny UAM, 2019) Jocz, ArturAdam Wiśniewski-Snerg (1937-1995) was a Polish science fiction writer. In his novel Robot (1973), he made an attempt at a literary visualization of a machine acquiring human identity. In this article I would like to follow the ethical consequences of such situations in created literary worlds. It is worth remembering, however, that these artistic worlds often serve to test non-literary reality. In his novel, Wiśniewski-Snerg also dealt with the problem of human feelings (e.g. moral dilemmas) in a thinking machine, which is formed in the image and likeness of a human being. Such literary reflection is valuable, partly because it enters into an interesting dialogue with the work of Bruno Schulz (18921942), one of the most important Polish writers of the 20th century. It is also one of the first attempts in Polish literature to address the issue of sentient machines, and is a kind of preview of contemporary dilemmas connected with the work on the creation of artificial intelligence. An example of such a dilemma is the issue of the sentient machine’s perception of the tasks imposed on it by the human-constructor. Perhaps it will start to experience them as a kind of unethical oppression. In Wiśniewski-Snerg’s writing this problem of is, of course, expressed in a metaphorical way.Item Literatura a religia. O potrzebie religioznawczej refleksji w obrębie literaturoznawstwa(Wydawnictwo Fundacji Humaniora, 2013) Jocz, ArturLiterature and religion. On the need for religious studies reflection in the sphere of literary studies. Today, no one is surprised by a philosophical reflection on religion. Are the relations between literature and religion similarly attractive in terms of cognition, as well? Is it worth anything to deliberate on the issue of incorporating literature into the sphere of the scientific interests of specialists in religious studies at all? Therefore, the aim of considerations herein is not only an attempt to indicate the ways of recognising the processes in question using the apparatus of religious studies, but also an intention to consider the chance for possible support of the efforts undertaken by literary scholars. Due to the character of the sketch herein, the ascertainment contained in it only signals the existence of a more complex research project. It has been conceived as a certain reflection on the phenomenon of the reception of gnosis, Gnosticism and Neo-Gnosis in literature.Item Opisać duchową rzeczywistość. Rozważania o statusie ezoteryki w literaturze polskiej przełomu XIX i XX wieku(Polskie Towarzystwo Religioznawcze, 2014) Jocz, ArturPresented solutions will focus on the attempt to provide several literature ways of expressing the metaphysical reality, that is, a transcendent one against the material world. The recalled examples have been taken from the works of Stanisław Przybyszewski (1868-1927) and Tadeusz Miciński (1873-1918). A characteristic feature of the spiritual search of both writers was also the striving for implementing into the ground of their literature the diverse elements of the European esoteric tradition, including gnosticism and neognosis.Item Pluralizm metafizyczny, czyli o religii jako tworzywie dzieła artystycznego(Polskie Towarzystwo Religioznawcze, 2010) Jocz, ArturArtur Jocz – METAPHYSICAL PLURALISM, OR RELIGION AS THE MATERIAL OF THE WORK OF ART The fundamental aim of these reflections is not a detailed reconstruction of the evolution of European metaphysics. The origins and development of this metaphysics will only be mentioned briefly. The attention will be focused mainly on the act of observation of reality in which there is no single metaphysical vision since it was replaced by metaphysical pluralism. For the use of these considerations it is enough to discuss only one element of this colourful reality. In other words, the aim of this article is to consider the migration of some selected conceptual categories that original-ly were components of religious-philosophical conceptions. These conceptions came into being as a result of metaphysical pluralism. Due to this process, these categories became the material of works of art. Thus, it will be another example of relations between religious and artistic activity. The diver-sity of this phenomenon will be illustrated by two examples taken from literature and film.Item Religijne poszukiwania w literaturze. Dążenie do wsparcia religii poprzez naukę(Polskie Towarzystwo Religioznawcze, 2010) Jocz, ArturArtur Jocz – RELIGIOUS SEARCH IN LITERATURE. THE ASPIRATION TOWARDS THE SUP-PORT OF RELIGION BY SCIENCE Mutual relations between religion and philosophy/science do function in European culture from its very beginning. It has had been discussed in the age of early Christian polemics on the position of philosophy and philosophical praxis. Is this specific co-existence still possible after a the modern criticism of great metaphysical systems of the Middle Ages? Does there exist a meta-physical concept which constituted as an alternative answer to the charges put into discourse by Descartes (1596-1650) and Kant (1724-1804)? The will to answer these questions will be the main aim of following remarks. It will be realized through an attempt of describing the phenomena of penetration of religious concepts onto the field of literature. With other words, it means a closer view on the phenomena of metaphysics, religiosity of literature, and in effect maybe also the literary character of metaphysics and religion. The phenomena excites intellectually as well by the fact, that we may find in it a specific aspiration towards adopting the discoveries of natural sciences. On the ground of Polish literature a similar conglomerate of religion and metaphysics, literature and science is being usually related to the works of writers and poets of the so called Young Poland movement.Item Spór i próba dialogu. O religijnej i laickiej narracji w życiu publicznym(Polskie Towarzystwo Religioznawcze, 2014) Jocz, ArturThe aim of the remarks included here will be an attempt to track two kinds of narration which function in today’s public/scientific sphere. They are being led between intellectuals with a secular background and religiously engaged intellectuals, and those who in their remarks do not resign from the transcendent reality. So, there will be narrations considered related to the secular and religious interpretation of the Holocaust. Recalled will be also secular and religious readings of selected problems related to genetic engineering. The selection of such a diverse array of topics should serve for a better argumentation of the assumption saying that at the basis of religious and secular narration is situated a dynamic relation between faith and reason.Item Stanisława Przybyszewskiego literackie próby wyrażenia fenomenu sacrum(Polskie Towarzystwo Religioznawcze, 2012) Jocz, ArturArtur Jocz – STANISŁAW PRZYBYSZEWSKI'S LITERARY ATTEMPTS OF EXPRESSING THE PHENOMENON OF THE SACRED The starting point in these remarks is the suggestion by Stanisław Przybyszewski (1868-1927), that the nature of Man is to be understood only in the perspective of transcendent reality, through relating it to the sphere of the sacred. The reality of its existence is being pointed out by all grand religious and philosophical traditions recalled by the author. However, he himself was convinced that the best cognition of the transcendent reality is guaranteed by art and/or literature. He had set therefore to the works created by himself an extremely maximalistic goal. It was to some extent cha-racteristic for the art at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century, in which people tried to redefine the essence of the sacred sphere and its relation to Man.Item Szczególny przypadek recepcji gnozy w Polsce. Jerzego Prokopiuka poszukiwanie duchowości(Polskie Towarzystwo Religioznawcze, 2016) Jocz, ArturWhen describing the presence of gnosis in Polish culture it is impossible not to mention Jerzy Prokopiuk (born 1931). However, his work shouldn’t be reduced just to its huge translatory, publishing and popularization legacy. It is also worth to note his personal spiritual, intellectual and gnostic searches and to relate them to the history of the reception of gnosis in Poland. Thus, the aim of these remarks is an attempt to reconstruct Prokopiuk’s reflections on the essence of God, the nature of the world and the human phenomenon.Item W stronę metafizyki. Duchowe eksperymenty w literaturze(Polskie Towarzystwo Religioznawcze, 2011) Jocz, ArturArtur Jocz – TOWARDS METAPHYSICS. SPIRITUAL EXPERIMENTS IN LITERATURE The main scope of my remarks is an attempt to present the phenomena of metaphysical searches in the field of literature. The problem tackled is interesting foremost because of the fact, that the authors mentioned intent (sometimes even not knowing it) to re-interpret the categories of classic metaphysics (for example spirituality – materiality). I will be especially interested in the phenomenon of diminishing the border line between the spiritual and material reality, or even a specific materialization of the spiritual sphere.
