Item Old Tombs, New Tenants. Third Intermediate Period and Late Period Reuse of Theban Tombs(2021) Kaczanowicz, Marta; Koliński, Rafał. Promotor; Ćwiek, Andrzej. PromotorThe purpose of this study was to investigate the strategies of the reuse of tombs from the Egyptian necropolis of Thebes in the Third Intermediate Period and Late Period (1076-332 BCE). My aim was to analyse the available data on the reuse of Theban tombs, offer some observations regarding the patterns and developments, examine previous scientific hypotheses, and try to better understand the phenomenon of the popularity of the reuse of tombs by the population of Thebes in the first millennium BCE. Chapters 1-3 contain a summary of the historical events of the Third Intermediate Period and Late Period, a general description of methods used in this work and presentation of data in the Catalogue, as well as criteria of dating burials discovered in reused monuments. Chapter 4 examines the topography of the Theban necropolis with respect to the reuse of tombs, as well as possible links between the reused structures and other monuments. In Chapter 5, I focus on the technicalities of the reuse: burials were divided into five types, according to the feature in which they were deposited. Chapter 6 turns to the notions of reuse and sacred space, and examines the perception of the tomb reuse by the Thebans living in the first millennium BCE. In Chapter 7, I address the question of the identity of the new occupants of reused tombs. In Excursus, several remarks regarding the very specific kind of tomb reuse, the so-called ‘caches’, are offered. In Chapter 8, I attempt to put the phenomenon of tomb reuse in the context of more general changes that took place in Egypt in the first millennium BCE.
