Item Developing information competence in translator training – a mixed-method longitudinal study(2020) Paradowska, Urszula; Droździał Szelest, Krystyna. Promotor; Chmiel, Agnieszka. PromotorThis dissertation was aimed to investigate whether translation students can successfully increase their information competence as a result of a purposeful intervention. The dissertation is divided into two parts: the theoretical framework and the empirical research. Chapter 1 focuses on translator training and translation process research studies. Chapter 2 presents the concepts of information competence as well as web search behaviour and expertise. In Chapter 3, the author analyses how the various translation competence models address the issue of the effective use of information. Chapters 4 and 5 present the methodological framework and findings of the empirical study conducted to address the aims of this thesis. The results of a cross-case analysis of quantitative data and qualitative (within-case) analyses of four individual cases appear to support the claim that deliberate practice during an intervention embedded into a general translation course contributes to an improvement in the students’ information competence. The study findings may be particularly useful for translation teachers, translation process researchers and professional translators.
