Item Bordering the Other. Mutual Relations of Poland and Germany from a Multidisciplinary Perspective(Wydawnictwo Naukowe WNPiD UAM, 2011) Jańczak, Jarosław; Trosiak, Cezary; Seyfried, ErwinItem Conditions for Initiating the Procedure of Poland’s Withdrawal from the European Union(Wydawnictwo Naukowe Wydziału Nauk Politycznych i Dziennikarstwa UAM, 2020) Trosiak, CezaryPolexit is a concept that emerged in the political science discourse when the United Kingdom held a referendum on its continued membership of the European Union on June 26, 2016. The article analyzes the reasons which facilitate a discussion on the withdrawal of Poland from the European Union. On the one hand, this results from disputes on the direction of the evolution of the European project between ‘old’ and ‘new’ member states. On the other, its intensity is affected by the dynamics of the dispute between the Polish government and the European Commission on the state of the rule of law in Poland. For supporters of a change in relations between European institutions and member states, the European parliamentary elections offered an opportunity of starting a discussion on the change of treaties. However, due to the fact that proponents of treaty changes failed to win the appropriate number of seats, the vision of an EU of ‘two speeds’ is becoming realistic. This may mark the beginning of a sequence of events concluded with a referendum on the withdrawal of Poland from the European Union.Item Dyskusja i spory wokół wprowadzania podwójnych nazw miejscowości na terenie Śląska Opolskiego(Wydział Nauk Politycznych i Dziennikarstwa UAM, 2013) Trosiak, CezaryThe emergence of a German minority in the western part of Śląsk Górny (Upper Silesia, Opolskie Region) in 1989 stirred a discussion, mainly among sociologists and political scientists, on the criteria that would make it possible to solve the issue of justifying this minority’s presence in Poland. At the same time, the leaders of those minority circles faced the task of demonstrating that they were German in ethnic and cultural terms. For both parties it became important to force the Polish Parliament to pass a “minority law” as it came to be called. The battle for the provisions of this act, with varying intensity, lasted until January 2005, when it was signed by the President of Poland and the law entered into force in May of the same year. The adoption of the law on ethnic and national minorities and regional languages enabled minorities to introduce double naming of places where they reside. Initially, this phenomenon was most intense in the Opole part of Górny Śląsk triggering a full range of reactions, ranging from the definitely hostile, threatening an outbreak of an ethnic conflict, to treating this phenomenon as an element enhancing the socio-cultural attractiveness of regions inhabited by minorities.Item Socjologiczne aspekty kształtowania się pogranicza polsko-niemieckiego po II wojnie światowej(Wydział Prawa i Administracji UAM, 1992) Trosiak, CezaryThe author presents borderland as a theoretical category, exemplifing his considerations by the findings of pre- and post war Polish sociology. The autor discusses the history of Polish-German borderland over the last 200 years, with special attention paid to contacts between the inhabitants of borderland. He also points to the symptoms of formation of Polish-German borderland along the Odra-Nysa rivers after 1972, and to the existence of a so-called borderland society (including German minority on Western Territories of Poland). Finally, the autor points to varions social, economic and cultural phenomena taking place in the Western Territories and indicates that those issues should become the object of extensive sociological research.Item The historical and sociological determinants of Polish-Ukrainian political dialogue(Wydział Nauk Politycznych i Dziennikarstwa UAM, 2021) Trosiak, CezaryThe presence of over a million Ukrainian immigrants in Poland has inspired various analyses and studies. They seek to answer the question of how this largest group of immigrants, living in Poland mainly for economic and educational purposes, will influence the course of discussions on the social, political, cultural and, finally, economic consequences of migration. Yet another question, which the author of this article is attempting to answer, concerns how historical events such as the “Volhynia slaughter” and the forced displacement of Polish and Ukrainian people from 1939 to 1952 will affect the content and intensity of Polish-Ukrainian political dialogue and the content of political history. The author formulates the thesis that both Poles and Ukrainians can use these events to achieve short-term political goals. Overcoming historical burdens is a process that will take many years and last for generations. Politics, however, is more short-term and its vectors frequently change. This observation should encourage taking up the challenges related to Polish-Ukrainian reconciliation, which is a necessary condition for good neighbourly relations between the Republic of Poland and Ukraine, and more broadly, between Poles and Ukrainians, both in Poland and in Ukraine.Item The role of ethno-regional parties in European integration. Is it a distractor or a catalyst?(Wydział Nauk Politycznych i Dziennikarstwa Uniwersytetu im. Adama Mickiewicza w Poznaniu, 2017) Trosiak, CezaryIn the article, the author seeks to find what role regional parties should and can perform in the process of European integration. The significance of this question stems from the fact that regional parties tend to face reluctance from the political authorities and societies of “nationalizing states.” In the introduction, the author shows how approach to regionalism changed in Europe in the mid-1980s, most prominently in the concept of “new regionalism.” He continues to describe the ongoing debate on what regional parties and their particular form, ethno-regional parties, are and the roles they perform in the political systems of contemporary European states. An example is also provided of the political rivalry in the region and the general principles governing competition at the region level. The author believes that the insights into the functioning of regional party systems can be useful in analyzing socio-political processes, especially in Upper Silesia.Item Uwarunkowania awansu zawodowego kobiet na polskich uczelniach(Wydział Nauk Politycznych i Dziennikarstwa UAM, 2011) Przybylska-Maszner, Beata; Trosiak, CezaryThe paper deals with the issue of the professional promotion of women working in the aca- demic sector, in the context of Poland’s membership of the European Union. The authors dis- cuss European legal requirements in this respect in order to assess the state of implementation of the recommendations issued by the European Commission and the European Parliament, and included in the European Charter for Researchers and the Code of Conduct for the Re- cruitment of Researchers in Poland. Next, using statistical data from the 2007 and 2011 re- ports of the Central Statistical Office, the authors describe the proportion of women in the structures of academic workers at different levels of academic career and attempt to explain the conditions of the situation they identify. A considerable part of the paper concerns the results of pilot studies carried out among fe- male academics of the Faculty of Political Science and Journalism of Adam Mickiewicz Uni- versity for the purpose of this paper. Finally, the authors recommend concrete solutions for changing the legal and institutional conditions in order to increase the number of female aca- demics.
