Application of electrophysiological methods in the study of binocular summation and cortical inhibition

Abstract

The focal point of this PhD thesis is to explore the consequences of binocular summation and inhibition by using electrodes spanning the entire cortex in subjects without visual disorders and with inter-ocular inhibition (various types of strabismus, amblyopia). The theoretical section of the thesis presents the basics of normal binocular vision and binocularity disorders while the research section includes a detailed description of encephalography and the analytical methods applied by the authors. Three experiments have been conducted in order to answer a series of research questions, including: (1) Is the process of visual summation detectable using VEP method and is it possible to define the level of binocular signal integration? (2) Where are the cortical sources of binocular summation located? (3) What is the level of information processing (early – the primary cortex or late – perceptual inhibition) at which cortical inhibition occurs as a result of induced suppression? (4) Is the level of binocular summation in the brain cortex related to the extent of inter-ocular inhibition in patients with actual suppression resulting from binocular vision disorders? The results of the research described above brought new insight into the process of binocular summation and cortical inhibition at the cortical level. It has been shown that the EEG/VEP method may be a useful tool to explore the process of binocular vision. The method may also be utilized inorder to determine the maturity of cerebral cortex and become a clinical tool used to monitor changes in the cortex which might occur as a result of various binocular vision therapies.
