National identity of German minority leaders in selected areas of Northern Poland
Abstract
Przedmiotem badań są instytucje mniejszości niemieckiej (stowarzyszenia) w wybranych miejscowościach Polski północnej, podmiotem zaś liderzy formalni i nieformalni. Badaniami objęto stowarzyszenia funkcjonujące w województwach: pomorskim, części województwa kujawsko-pomorskiego, części województwa warmińsko-mazurskiego oraz północnej części województwa wielkopolskiego. Położenie stowarzyszeń pokrywa się w większości z terenem byłej prowincji Prusy Zachodnie (1878-1920) oraz terytorium byłego II Wolnego Miasta Gdańska (1920-1939). Celem pracy jest przedstawienie tożsamości narodowej (i etnicznej) liderów instytucji mniejszości niemieckiej w kontekście ich etnicznej aktywności organizacyjnej po 1989 r. Przeprowadzono case study układu społecznego z uwzględnieniem struktury, zasad funkcjonowania, relacji wewnątrz- i zewnątrzgrupowych oraz wewnętrznej dynamiki tego układu. Podstawową koncepcją teoretyczną, w oparciu o którą rozpatrywana jest tożsamość liderów, jest koncepcja tożsamości etnicznej Johna Miltona Yingera, stanowiąca jednocześnie synonim etniczności. Badania mają również na celu zapełnienie luki w opracowaniach socjologicznych w podejmowanej problematyce na obszarze w większości wchodzącym w skład regionu Pomorza Gdańskiego.
The subject of this study includes formal institutions (associations), represented by formal and informal leaders of German minority groups in selected areas of northern Poland. The sample contains associations that operate in Pomerania, a part of Kujawsko-Pomorskie voivodship, the Warmia-Mazury voivodship and the northern part of the Wielkopolska voivodship. The location of the associations coincides largely with former province of West Prussia (1878-1920) and the territory of the former Second Free City of Danzig (1920-1939). The main objective of this study is to present the national and ethnic identities of leaders of the German minority organizations in the context of their activities after 1989. An in-depth case study of social construction, including structure and operating principles, considering internal and external interactions and the dynamics of this system was carried out. The empirical analysis of the leaders' identities are based on the main theoretical concept of ethnic identity that simultaneously constitutes a synonym of ethnicity by John Milton Yinger. The enquiry attempts to bridge the gap in available sociological studies that refer to the subject matter in the Pomerania region.
