Elokwencja romantyczna w dziełach Charlesa Nodiera i pisarzy z kręgu Biblioteki Arsenału (1824-1834)

Abstract

Rozprawa poświęcona jest historii retoryki w romantyzmie francuskim. Autorka skupia się na dziełach twórców ze środowiska Charlesa Nodiera i Biblioteki Arsenału w Paryżu w latach 1824-1834. Celem badań jest lepsze rozumienie miejsca Nodiera w romantycznym pejzażu literackim oraz wykazanie jego wpływu na koncepcję elokwencji w pierwszej połowie dziewiętnastego wieku. Główną tezą pracy jest stwierdzenie pewnej ciągłości w dziedzinie teorii retorycznych między późnym neoklasycyzmem Oświecenia oraz pierwszym romantyzmem francuskim. Tezą pomocniczą jest stwierdzenie wpływu retorycznego rozumienia gatunków na fenomen romantycznej transgeneryczności (mieszanie gatunków). Pierwsza część pracy poświęcona jest historii retoryki od czasów Rewolucji Francuskiej do czasów Monarchii lipcowej, zarówno w kontekście jej nauczania szkolnego i akademickiego, jak i w kontekście politycznym. Druga część rozprawy podejmuje pewne wątki teoretyczno-literackie związane z romantyczną elokwencją (wyłonienie się nowej definicji literatury, sakralizacja pisarza-mówcy w porewolucyjnym społeczeństwie, tzw. „scenografie auktorialne” (J.-L. Diaz) romantyzmu humanitarnego i ironicznego, oralność literatury romantycznej, problem z definicją gatunków literackich na przełomie osiemnastego i dziewiętnastego wieku). Trzecia, analityczna część rozprawy poświęcona jest gatunkom retorycznym w dziełach romantycznych. Zbadane są gatunek pochwalny, sądowy oraz deliberatywny w dziełach pisarzy z kręgu Arsenału (Nodier, Balzac, Hugo, Lamartine, Musset, Sainte-Beuve oraz tzw. romantycy mniejsi, tacy jak Gaspard de Pons i Eduard Turquety).

This dissertation considers the history of rhetoric in the French Romanticism, focusing on the works of the authors from the circle of Charles Nodier and Library of the Arsenal between 1824 and 1834. It attempts to provide a better understanding of Nodier's place in the Romantic literary landscape, as well as to demonstrate his influence on the concept of eloquence in the first half of the nineteenth century. The main thesis of the dissertation is that there is a continuity between the rhetorical theories of the late neoclassicism and the first French Romanticism. The supporting thesis is that the rhetorical understanding of the genre exerted influence on the phenomenon of the Romantic transgenericity. The first part of the dissertation considers the history of rhetoric from the French Revolution to the July Monarchy, with respect to school education, academic instruction as well as politics. The second part of this dissertation explores the Romantic eloquence in matters of the new definition of literature, the new place of the writer in the post-revolutionary society, authorial scenographies of humanitarian and ironic Romanticism, the orality of Romantic literature, as well as the problem with the definition of literary genres at the turn of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The third part of the dissertation analyses the works of Nodier, Balzac, Hugo, Lamartine, Musset, Sainte-Beuve, as well as of minor Romantics with respect to demonstrative, judicial and deliberative rhetorical genres.

La thèse est consacrée à l’histoire de la rhétorique dans le romantisme français. L’auteur s’est concentré sur les œuvres des écrivains appartenant au cercle de Charles Nodier et de la Bibliothèque de l’Arsenal dans la période de 1824 à 1834. L’objectif des analyses est une meilleure compréhension du rôle de Nodier dans le paysage de la littérature romantique et de son influence sur l’élaboration théorique du concept de l’éloquence romantique dans la première moitié du XIXe siècle. L’auteur démontre la continuité entre la théorie rhétorique néoclassique et la théorie de l’éloquence romantique. De plus, l’auteur défend l’idée sur l’influence des genres rhétoriques sur la pratique romantique de la transgénéricité. La première partie de l’étude porte sur l’histoire de la rhétorique dès la Révolution Française à la Monarchie de Juillet, dans son contexte à la fois scolaire, académique et politique. La seconde partie soulève quelques questions d’ordre théorique liées à la pratique romantique de l’éloquence, à savoir le lien entre le sacre de l’écrivain et le retour à l’éloquence, les « scénographies auctoriales » dans leur lien à l’éthos de l’écrivain, l’oralité de la littérature romantique, la définition des genres littéraires et rhétoriques à la charnière des XVIIIe et XIXe siècles. La troisième partie de l’étude, proprement analytique, présente le fonctionnement des genres rhétoriques (l’épidictique, le délibératif et le judicaire) dans les œuvres des écrivains appartenant au cercle de l’Arsenal (Nodier, Balzac, Hugo, Lamartine, Musset, Sainte-Beuve et quelques écrivains mineurs comme Gaspard de Pons et Éduard Turquety).
