Mikołaj Radziwiłł the Red – a positive hero of Jan Radwan’s epic Radivilias
Abstract
This study concerns an epic poem entitled Radivilias (Vilnius 1592) by Jan Radwan, the subject of
which is the Livonian War regarded as the greatest military exploit of Mikołaj Radziwiłł the Red.
The poem based mainly on Lucan’s Bellum civile with extensive Vergilian imitation portrays Mikołaj
Radziwiłł the Red as a heroic individual struggling against the invasion of Ivan the Terrible in 1564.
Heroic epic poem entitled Radivilias sive de vita et rebus praeclarissime gestis immortalis memoriae illustrissimi principia Nicolai Radivili […] libri quattuor by Jan Radwan, published in 1592 in Vilnius, glorifies in Latin the life and deeds of Mikołaj Radziwiłł the Red. Radwan’s narrative offers itself as a representation of historical events relation arranged in chronological order, the participant of which Radziwiłł the Red was during the Livonian War (1558–1582) when Poland and Lithuania struggled against Moscow and Ivan the Terrible. Historical events are the background for the main hero presented here as an ideal ruler and citizen, gifted military commander, a person respected for his bravery, moral strength, honour and a noble mind. Radziwiłł appears as a pattern of all the virtues and sets us a good example. His personal and civil virtues, his experiences, thoughts and attitudes are described according to both the ancient system of moral principles and Christian science of morals.
