Velikani u neprimjetnome. August Šenoa, Josip Eugen Tomić i poljsko-hrvatsko dopisivanje. Kulturne veze između Velike Poljske i Hrvatske u 19. stoljeću
Abstract
Great in inconspicuous. August Senoa, Josip Eugen Tomić and Polish-Croatian correspondence. Cultural relations between the Greater Poland and Croatia in the nineteenth century.
The subject of the book is Poles correspondence addressed to Augusta Senoa, Josip Eugen and Hermina Tomić, stored in the National and University Libraries in Zagreb and the picture of the cross-cultural perception of both nations emerging from it. In addition to the letters, especially underlined is the importance of the Greater's Poland press in bringing closer a cultural heritage of Croatia. Hence, analysis of individual letters is preceded by a discussion about the context of Greater Poland-Croatian cultural contacts in the nineteenth century and a chapter on the image of Croatia and South Slavs, which emerges from periodicals published in Poznan. The argument complete the archival photographs having a value of the source material, obtained from the National and University Library in Zagreb, the Croatian State Archives and Museum of Arts and Crafts, and of those mentioned above, writers, and views of Zagreb. The specificity of the issue in question resulted in a bilingual study (containing also translations of Polish letters manuscripts into Croatian).
Showing major signs of interest in the Polish press widely understood culture of the Slavs, especially Croats, is a testimony to the existence of a deep relationship between the two nations. It is a proof of the existence of close and deep relationship between Poland and Croatia, which can be considered the beginning of a regular and professional promotion of the mutual cultural heritage. Interest in the South Slavs, in particular the Croatian literature in the Greater Poland was partially a result of a specific cultural atmosphere that prevailed in this part of annexed territory of Poland through the nineteenth century.
The first anniversary of the entry of Croatia into the EU passing in 2014 provides an excellent opportunity to show our common past, which determinant in this case is culture and literature. At the same time, this fact allows us to ask questions about the condition of Polish-Croatian cultural contacts, about forms of their cultivating and strengthening in the realities of twenty-first-century Europe of nations.
