Abstract
The concept o f knowledge management has been gaining more and more significance
in management o f an organization. At the same time, the importance of the group o f
staff labelled as knowledge workers, whose members have high levé o f competence in
particular fields, appropriate education or experience and for whom the most important
goal is to do research and to foster dissemination o f its results or its applications, is being
emphasized. This group also includes librarians. It is their innovativeness and productivity
that influences to a high degree a successful operation of an institution. This group,
however, on account o f its position within the structure of an organization, is more than
ready to question management styles or organizational issues of their parent institutions
should a need arise. A creation of proper organizational culture of staff and its subsequent
maintenance poses then a serious challenge that requires a particular set of actions. The
paper, describing the specificity of this group o f employees, attempts to discuss difficulty
and complexity o f actions to be undertaken by the management especially by the head
librarian, to construct and maintain an appropriate organizational culture in the library.
