Social Constructs of Girls’ Aggression. Selected Contexts and Controversies

Abstract

The aim of this article is the reconstruction of contemporary construction of femininity, in which howing aggressive behavior among children and youth is an important feature. Stephen L. Franzoi distinguishes two kinds of aggression: instrumental and oriented at present hostility. At the root of the former lies conscious behavior to achieve certain goals. The latter is a goal in itself. It sometimes leads to death. There are two basic theories of aggression. The first of them refers to biological instincts, while the other is related to social psychology and assumes that aggression is caused by external social factors. Contemporary media discourses no longer “localize” the girl as a victim of violence, but an active, conscious and assertive perpetrator of this violence. In the future we canexpect the emergence of parallel patterns of aggression in women: relational and oriented physical violence.
