The death rate in the northern regions of poland in its social and vocational aspect
Abstract
The purpose of the paper is to present differentiated coefficients of death, which relate to two social and vocational groups in the northern regions of Poland in the years of 1950 and 1951 as well as of 1960 and 1961. The comparisons have been done among deceased whose source of livelihood was agriculture and those who made their lives in non-agricultural occupations. To northern regions of Poland the author included: the voivodship of Szczecin, Koszalin, Gdańsk and Olsztyn. As a basis for the calculations served the death registrations in said voivodships in the years of 1950 and 1951 as well as of 1960 and 1961 according to sex, age, source of revenue and the similar data drawn from the census of 1950 and 1960.
On a basis of calculated coefficients of death for each of the four voivodships separately, for all four taken together and for the country as a whole — the author puts forward some observations and assertions: 1) In the examined ten year period a substantial decline in death rate in the northern regions can be observed (the same is true to the country as a whole). A particularly sharp decline has taken place among young boys (the 0—4 year group of age) whose parents made their livelihood in non-agricultural occupations. 2) In the year of 1950 the coefficients of death irrespectively of sex, age and source of revenue were among people finding their livelihood in non-agricultural occupations — higher. In 1960 the coefficients among the said group of population were lower than in agriculture (general coefficients and in the age group of 0—4), whereas in the other age groups they were — as before — higher. 3) Among the four voivodships — the voivodship of Gdańsk characterized itself in both periods by the lowest coefficients. 4) The coefficients of any of the four voivodships with regard to age and source of revenue oscillate around the whole country level — what can be looked upon as a symptom of stabilization of the northern regions and of full integration with the former territories of Poland.
