Item Metaphors from Other Sports in the Language of Soccer – Evidence from English and Polish(SORUS S.C. Wydawnictwo i Drukarnia Cyfrowa, 2009) Lewandowski, MarcinThis paper investigates soccer metaphors that have been drawn from the vocabularies of other popular sports, such as boxing, track and field athletics, sailing, etc. The language material, which comes from English and Polish language sports websites, has been grouped and discussed according to source domains (i.e., specific sports). Drawing on Lakoff and Johnson’s theory of metaphor, the author analyzes four new conceptual metaphors: A SOCCER MAT CH IS A BOXING BOUT , SOCCER COMPETITION IS A RACE, A SOCCER TEAM IS A SAILING VESSEL, and A SOCCER MAT CH IS A GAME OF CHESS.Item Słownictwo muzyczne w socjolekcie punków(SORUS S.C. Item The Language of Soccer – a Sociolect or a Register?(SORUS S.C. Wydawnictwo i Drukarnia Cyfrowa, 2008) Lewandowski, MarcinThe theoretical framework of this paper is based upon the views of Polish and Anglo-Saxon sociolinguists on the concepts of sociolect and register. In the main section the author gives a brief overview of the language of soccer and distinguishes 10 subvarieties of this language, which differ from each other mainly in lexico-grammatical as well as stylistic features. Finally, the author attempts to categorize each of these subvarieties as either a sociolect or a register.Item The Rhetoric of Violence in Polish and English Soccer Reporting(SORUS S.C. Wydawnictwo i Drukarnia Cyfrowa, 2011) Lewandowski, MarcinThis paper explores the use of conflict-related metaphors in soccer language in a contrastive perspective within the framework of Conceptual Metaphor Theory by Lakoff and Johnson (1980). The analysis, which involves both a quantitative and qualitative approach, aims to demonstrate that FOOTBALL is conceptualized not only in terms of WAR but also of other source domains. Thus in addition to the SOCCER MATCH IS WAR metaphor, the author proposes and discusses three other conceptual metaphors: DEFEAT IS DEATH, A SOCCER MATCH IS A BOXING BOUT and ATTEMPTING TO SCORE IS HUNTING, all of which, to a large extent, frame the soccer reporting discourse.
