Motifs of destruction and transgression in the literary works of the Iraqi writer Haifa Zangana
Abstract
Podstawowym założeniem niniejszej pracy jest przedstawienie motywów zniszczenia i transgresji w dziełach literackich irackiej pisarki Haify Zangany (1950 -) i głęboki wpływ przeszłości na życie autorki i jej bohaterów. Pierwsza część "Życie i twórczość Haify Zangany" prezentuje jej biografię i jest próbą klasyfikacji jej dzieł literackich. Kolejna część"Motywy destrukcji w twórczości Haify Zangany" prezentuje różne formy destrukcji w utworach. Dotyczy to głównie więzienia, przemocy, tortur i chorób. Zniszczenie ukazuje degradację psychiczną, która przejawia się apatią, depresja, bezsennością i ciągłym przeżywaniem traumatycznych wydarzeń z życia. Emocje, niepowodzenia i zachowania bohaterów na emigracji są kolejnym elementem świata narracji i przedmiotem analizy literackiej. Trzecia część "Motywy transgresji w twórczości Haify Zangany" pokazuje zmiany w świadomości i postawach bohaterów. Niektórzy z nich stoją przed wyzwaniami i próbują zmienić swoje życie a inni uciec w świat snów, koszmarów sennych i niesamowitości. Ostatnia część "Między destrukcją a transgresją" ukazuje publicystykę Haify Zangany. W marcu 2003 roku przestała pisać prozę i skoncentrowała się na dziennikarstwie i prawach człowieka w Iraku. Stało się to jej narzędziem krytyki i ukazywania problemów, które wymagają rozwiązania lub publicznej dyskusji.
The primary objective of this dissertation is to present motifs of destruction and transgression in the literary works by the Iraqi writer Haifa Zangana (1950-) and the profound influence the author’s past has had on the lives of her characters. The first part “Haifa Zangana’s Life and Works” presents her biography and is an attempt at a classification of her literary works. The second “Motifs of Destruction in Haifa Zangana’s Works” presents the destruction found in the texts referring to imprisonment and violence, including torture and illnesses. The destruction shows psychological degradation manifested in apathy, depression, insomnia and constant revisiting of traumatic events. Emigration, emotions and behaviours of characters associated with it are another element of the narrative world and have been the subject of literary analysis. The third part “Motifs of Transgression in Haifa Zangana’s Works” shows changes in the awareness and attitudes of the characters. Some of them face challenges and try to change their lives or escape into the unreal, which can be seen in dreams, nightmares and eeriness. The last part “Between Destruction and Transgression” presents Haifa Zangana’s articles. In March 2003 she stopped writing prose and focused on journalism and human rights in Iraq. It is her tool used to condemn mistakes and point to problems which require a solution or public discussion.
