Linguistic landscape of the Kashubia region as an ethnic identity marker. A sociolinguistic study
Abstract
Rozprawa skupia się na zjawiskach językowospołecznych zachodzących na terenie Kaszub. Kaszubi w ostatnim czasie zaznaczają swoją obecność w pejzażu językowym kaszubskich wsi i miast, co jest głównym tematem dysertacji. Przyjęto, iż języki mniejszościowe znajdują odzwierciedlenie w przestrzeni publicznej, co w konsekwencji służy wyrażaniu i kreowaniu tożsamości etnicznej. Celem rozprawy jest ukazanie, gdzie oraz w jaki sposób język kaszubski jest widoczny w przestrzeni publicznej oraz relacji, jakie zachodzą między pejzażem językowym a społecznością zamieszkującą Kaszuby. Pierwsza część rozprawy przedstawia założenia stosunkowo nowej problematyki badawczej jaką jest pejzaż językowy. Na kształtowanie się postaw w stosunku do języka, a w konsekwencji wytworzenie się tożsamości etnicznej, ma wpływ przede wszystkim kontekst socjolingwistyczny, w jakim funkcjonuje język oraz status danego języka. Stąd w rozprawie poświęcono również uwagę sytuacji socjolingwistycznej na Kaszubach oraz problematyce polityki językowej. Ostatnią, czwartą część pracy stanowią rezultaty badań empirycznych przeprowadzonych przez autorkę na terenie Kaszub. Źródłem dla analizy obecności języka kaszubskiego w pejzażu językowym są fotografie napisów. Analiza relacji między pejzażem językowym a społeczeństwem została oparta na badaniach ankietowych, wywiadach pogłębionych oraz rozmowach. W centrum zainteresowania była sfera ocen i postaw świadomościowych. Rozprawa zwraca uwagę na funkcję symboliczną języka kaszubskiego widocznego w przestrzeni publicznej i rolę, jaką pełni w kreowaniu tożsamości etnicznej.
The thesis is focused on sociolinguistic phenomena which occur on the Kashubia region. Recently the Kashubs mark their presence in the linguistic landscape of Kashubian villages and towns, which is the main concern of the thesis. In the dissertation it has been assumed that minority languages are reflected in the linguistic landscape and as a consequence express an ethnic identity. The purpose of the dissertation was to investigate where and how the Kashubian language is present in the public space and to define relations between the linguistic landscape and inhabitants of the Kashubia region. The first part of the dissertation describes a considerably new concept of linguistic landscape studies. The attitudes towards language and consequently an ethnic identity creation are influenced by the sociolinguistic context in which the language functions and its status. Hence, the focus has also been put on general sociolinguistic situation on the Kashubia region and language policy. The last, fourth part of the thesis includes the findings of the empirical research that has been conducted by the author. The source for the analysis of the Kashubian language presence are photographs of its graphic displays. In order to investigate the relations between linguistic landscape and society an Internet questionnaire, in-depth interviews and talks have been conducted. Of the great interest it has been the sphere of language and cultural awareness and social attitudes. The dissertation draws attention to the symbolic function of the Kashubian language visible in public space and the role it plays in the creation of ethnic identity.
