Wpływ efektów interferencyjnych i korelacji kulombowskich na transport elektronowy przez układy kropek kwantowych

Abstract

Rozprawa doktorska opisuje pewne aspekty zjawisk transportowych w układach kropek kwantowych, a dokładniej, poświęcona jest efektom interferencji kwantowej i oddziaływań kulombowskich w transporcie cieplnym i elektronowym przez kropki kwantowe. Praca złożona jest z dziesięciu rozdziałow, z których pierwszy jest rodzajem wprowadzenia do transportu przez kropki kwantowe. W rozdziale tym opisane zostały rodzaje i podstawowe własności kropek kwantowych oraz wybrane modele transportu. Kolejene rozdziały stanowią głowny trzon pracy, ktory można podzielić na trzy główne części.Część pierwsza, zawierająca rozdziały 2 - 4, dotyczy zjawisk transportu w układach dwóchi trzech kropek kwantowych dołączonych do ferromagnetycznych elektrod. W rozdziałach 2-3 opisane zostały rezonanse Fano i Dicke oraz wpływ oddziaływań kulombowskich na transport przez te układy. Wyniki prezentowane w rozdziałach 2 i 3 uzyskano przy użyciu metody nierownowagowych funkcji Greena. W ogólności, prezentowane wyniki dotyczą zarówno odpowiedzi liniowej, jak i sytuacji nierównowagowej. Przeanalizowano również wpływ konfiguracji magnetycznej elektrod na transport przez rozpatrywane układy. Rozdział 4 dotyczy spinowo-zależnego transportu przez układ dwóch kropek kwantowych w zakresie słabego sprzężenia z elektrodami. Prezentowane wyniki zostały otrzymane przy użyciu metody diagramow przedstawionej w pierwszej części rozdziału 4. Prezentowane wyniki dotyczą układu dwóch kropek w różnych geometriach – od szeregowej do rownoległej. W obliczeniach uwzględnione zostały również efekty pośredniego sprzężenia kropek poprzez elektrody. Otrzymane wyniki pokazują, że renormalizacja poziomów kropek kwantowych związana ze sprzężeniem kropek z elektrodami oraz pośrednie oddziaływanie kropek kwantowych odgrywają dużą rolę w transporcie przez układ dwoch kropek kwantowych.Kolejna część rozprawy, składająca się z rozdziałow 5 - 7, dotyczy spinowego i orbitalnego efektu Kondo w układzie dwoch i/lub trzech kropek kwantowych sprzężonych z metalicznymi elektrodami. Do opisu tego efektu w rozpatrywanych układach kropek kwantowych użyto różnych metod: metoda skalowania, metoda bozonów pomocniczych, metoda nierównowagowych funkcji Greena. W rozdziale 5 opisano spinowy efekt Kondo w układzie dwóch kropek kwantowych połączonych w konfiguracji rownoległej. W pierwszej części tego rozdziału przedstawiono istotę efektu Kondo i podano najważniejsze odkrycia dotyczące transportu w reżimie Kondo przez kropkę kwantową. Przedstawione w tym rozdziale wyniki otrzymano stosując metodę bozonów pomocniczych, ktora jest dokładnie opisana w części 5.2. Otrzymane rezultaty pokazują, że w powstawaniu rezonansu Dicke-Kondo kluczową rolę odgrywa pośrednie oddziaływanie kropek kwantowych poprzez elektrody. Rozdział 6 jest poświęcony efektowi Dicke-Kondo w układzie trzech kropek kwantowych, z których tylko jedna z kropek jest dołączona do metalicznych elektrod i tylko na tej kropce występują oddziaływania kulombowskie. Rozdział 7 dotyczy orbitalnego efektu Kondo w układzie dwóch kropek kwantowych dołączonych do zewnętrznych elektrod. W pierwszej części tego rozdziału analizowany jest transport w reżimie Kondo przez układ dwóch kropek kwantowych, z których każda posiada własną parę elektrod transportowych. W części 7.2 opisano skalowanie poziomow energetycznych kropek kwantowych oraz wyznaczono temperaturę Kondo dla rozważanego modelu. Konduktancja liniowa została wyznaczona przy użyciu metody bozonow pomocniczych. Do opisu sytuacji nierównowagowej użyto natomiast metody nierównowagowych funkcji Greena, a otrzymane wyniki przedstawiono w części 7.4. Pokazano, że asymetria sprzężenia układu kropek z elektrodami prowadzi do rozszczepieniazero-napięciowej anomalii Kondo. W kolejnej części rozdziału 7 opisano wpływ procesów niediagonalnych na orbitalny efekt Kondo. Przedstawione wyniki sugerują możliwość obserwacji efektu Dicke-Kondo i efektu Fano-Kondo w układzie dwóch kropek kwantowych dołączonych do wspólnych elektrod. Rownież dla tego przypadku zostało przeprowadzone skalowanie poziomow energetycznych, oraz wyznaczono temperaturę Kondo.Rozdziały 8 - 10 tworzą trzecią część rozprawy. W rozdziale 8 opisany jest transport przez układ dwóch kropek kwantowych dołączonych do elektrod ferromagnetycznych (bądź niemagnetycznych) i jednej elektrody nadprzewodzącej. Przedstawione wyniki zostały otrzymane za pomocą metody nierównowagowych funkcji Greena. Analiza transportu została ograniczona do tzw. reżimu Andreeva, w ktorym „zwykłe” procesy tunelowe nie występują. Zbadany został wpływ asymetrii sprzężenia układu kropek do elektrod(y) normalnej i nadprzewodzącej, oddziaływań kulombowskich i magnetyzmu elektrod normalnych na tunelowanie Andreeva w rozważanym układzie, który można nazwać generatorem par Coopera. Kolejny rozdział poświęcony jest efektom termoelektrycznym w układzie, którego model został przedstawiony w rozdziale 2. W szczególności, został tam zbadany wpływ interferencji typu Fano, oddziaływań kulombowskich oraz ferromagnetyzmu elektrod na efektywność termoelektryczną rozważanego układu. W rozdziale 10 opisane zostały dudnienia w charakterystykach transportowych układu dwóch kropek sprzężonych do zewnętrznych elektrod wykonanych z metalu niemagnetycznego lub ferromagnetycznego, do których przyłożone jest napięcie ładunkowe lub spinowe. Metoda użyta do opisu zależnego od czasu transportu przez rozważany układ włącza do równania ruchu dla macierzy gęstości technikę nierównowagowych funkcji Greena oraz metodę bozonów pomocniczych. Prezentowane wyniki zostały otrzymane w przybliżeniu słabego sprzężenia kropek z elektrodami i wykorzystaniu rozwinięcia gradientowego. Na końcu rozdziału 10 przedstawiono również potencjalne zastosowania opisywanego układu.

The Thesis is devoted to transport phenomena through systems of coupled quantum dots attached to magnetic/nonmagnetic or spin-biased leads. Specifically, the interference and Coulomb correlation effects in double- and triple quantum dot systems coupled to the external leads are investigated theoretically. To obtain basic transport characteristics, including current-voltage curves, linear and nonlinear conductance, and tunnel magnetoresistance (TMR) associated with magnetization rotation, different methods have been used – adequate to the investigated physical problem.The Thesis consists of ten chapters. The first chapter plays a role of the introductory part which includes a short description of the basic properties of quantum dots, like energy level and charge quantization. The basic theory of electron transport through quantum dots is also described in this chapter. In chapter 2, the interference and Coulomb correlation effects in spin-dependent transport through two coupled quantum dots attached to ferromagnetic leads with collinear (parallel and antiparallel) magnetizations is analyzed theoretically in linear and nonlinear regime. A general model of such a system is assumed and the relevant Green functions are derived by the equation of motion (EOM) method. To close the set of equations the Hartree-Fock type approximation scheme has been applied. The dot occupation numbers and the Green functions are calculated self-consistently. It has been found that the magnitude and sign of the off-diagonal elements of the coupling matrix has great impact on the Fano antiresonance. Moreover, finite intradot Coulomb repulsions can lead to a significant enhancement of TMR. In chapter 3 spin-polarized transport through triple quantum dot attached to ferromagnetic leads is described. It is assumed that only one of the dots is coupled to the leads. The analogue of the Dicke effect – known in atomic physics, has been found in linear conductance. Additionally, we have calculated the TMR effect associated with rotation of the leads’ magnetic moments from antiparallel to parallel alignment, and shown that the intra-dot Coulomb correlation leads to some resonance-like enhancement of TMR at some values of the level positions. Chapter 4 is devoted to the spin-dependent transport through double quantum dot system weakly coupled to the external ferromagnetic leads. The presented results have been obtained using real-time diagrammatic technique in the parallel, serial, and intermediate geometries. The effects due to virtual tunneling processes between the two dots via the leads, associated with off-diagonal coupling matrix elements, are also considered. Negative differential conductance and negative tunnel magnetoresistance have been found in the case of serial and intermediate geometries, while no such behavior has been observed for double quantum dots coupled in parallel. It is also shown that transport characteristics strongly depend on the magnitude of the off-diagonal coupling matrix elements.Chapters 5 - 7 describe orbital and spin Kondo effects in systems of double- and triple quantum dots attached to the metallic leads. To describe this phenomenon various techniques have been utilized, like poor’s man scalling method, slave-boson approach and non-equilibrium Green function technique. Chapter 5 describes Kondo effect in double quantum dot system. The first section of this chapter is devoted to the essence of the Kondo effect and displays the most important discoveries corresponding to the Kondo assisted transport through quantum dot. The slave-boson method is described in section 5.2. It is shown that the Kondo peak reveals features typical for the Dicke effect, i.e., one Kondo peak plays a role of the superradiant mode while the second Kondo peak plays a role of subradiant mode. It has been shown that the nondiagonal elements of the coupling matrix play a significant role in the Dicke-Kondo phenomenon. In chapter 6 the Dicke-Kondo effect in triple quantum dot system is considered. The Kondo peak in the local density of states of the central dot becomes narrower due to the interplay of the Kondo and Dicke effects. The Kondo peak is even totally suppressed when the bare energy levels of the side dots are equal and located at the Fermi level. This leads to suppression of the zero-bias Kondo peak in the differential conductance. The interplay of the Kondo and Dicke resonances also has a significant impact on the shot-noise characteristics. In chapter 7 the orbital Kondo effect in a spinless system of two single-level quantum dots connected to electron reservoirs has been considered. Various techniques have been used to describe basic features of the Kondo physics. First, we used the scaling technique to evaluate the level renormalization and the corresponding Kondo temperature. Then, we used the slave boson technique to calculate local density of states and linear conductance. To find nonlinear conductance we used the nonequilibrium Green’s-function method. The obtained results show that asymmetry in coupling of two dots to the electrodes leads to the splitting of the zero-bias anomaly. In further part of the chapter 7 the influence of the nondiagonal elements of the coupling matrix has been investigated. The presented results show the possibility to observe Dicke-like or Fano-like line in linear conductance. Moreover, for this case the scaling procedure has been adapted and the Kondo temperature has been also evaluated.In chapter 8 Andreeve-like tunneling has been investigated in system of two quantum dots attached to normal (nonmagnetic or ferromagnetic) leads and one superconducting electrode. Here, the influence of the asymmetry in coupling of normal and superconducting leads, as well as Coulomb correlations and magnetism of the normal leads on the Andreev-like tunneling has been considered. The described system can be considered as Cooper pair generator. Chapter 9 describes thermoelectric effects in the system considered in chapter 2. In particular, the influence of the quantum interference effect, Coulomb correlation and ferromagnetism of the external leads on the thermoelectric efficiency has been investigated. The great enhancement of the thermoelectric efficiency has been found due to Fano effect. In last chapter beatings in transport characteristics has been reported for the system of two quantum dots attached to nonmagnetic, ferromagnetic or spin-biased leads. To describe the time-dependent phenomenon in such a system I combine the rate equation for density matrix with the non-equilibrium Green function formalism and slave-boson method. The presented results have been obtained within the weak coupling approximation and using gradient expansion. At the end of chapter 10 some potential practical applications of the considered phenomenon have been suggested.
