    Individuals with Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder in a Multimedia Learning Environment

    The paper is aimed at investigating the functioning of individuals with Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in a multimedia learning environment. The first part defines the disorder, focusing on brain processes of ADHD individuals. The second part discusses key theories connected with multimedia learning. Finally, the last part is an attempt to observe how ADHD learners learn from words and pictures.

    A proposal of a framework for analysis of multimodal message coherence (FAMC). Live report coherence pilot study

    We present an application of Framework for Analysis of Multimodal Message Coherence (FAMC) to a pilot study on live report (LR) coherence impact on audience’s memory and impressions. The study participants (6) were asked to watch LR with or without coherence manipulation and asked to recall key information and unusual elements from LR. FAMC is based on the Event Indexing Model (EIM) of message processing (Zwaan, Langston and Graesser 1995, Zwaan and Radvansky 1998, Czoska and Kara´skiewicz in print). The framework may enable assessment of local and global coherence of a multimodal message and provide basis for testing the impact of coherence manipulation on message understanding.

    Report. The workshop „Conflict and Communication. Multimodal Social Signals of Conflict and Negotiation in Humans, Animals, and Machines”, which took place on 29-31 October at Roma Tre University in Rome (Italy), was an interdisciplinary workshop that brought together scientists from many European countries as well as from Japan, Israel and the USA. The theme of the workshop were interpersonal and group conflicts seen from the perspective of psychology, sociology, linguistics, criminology, political sciences etc.

    Multimodality in glottodidactics: Some considerations on the glottodidactic analysis of internet specialist texts

    The main purpose of this article is to reflect on the question of multimodality in a glottodidactic context, by way of an analysis of internet specialist texts (IST). Here, I take multimodality to mean all the communicative modalities undertaken by man, as distinguished from multimediality, which is defined as an interaction of various technical media in delivering a message. This two dimensions (multimodality and multimediality) are strictly related and interdependent. First, I present a few terminological remarks about expressions that are of key importance for understanding the subject-matter at hand: multimodality, multimediality, electronic hypertext and internet specialist texts. Next, I describe selected changes to the glottodidactic system caused by the Internet, with particular emphasis on changes in the way in which internet texts are formulated. Referring to F. Grucza’s anthropocentric theory of human languages, I draw attention to the structure of internet hypertexts and internet specialist texts and the possibility of a glottodidactic description thereof. Regarding the latter, I present the criteria governing a glottodidactic analysis of internet specialist texts, after which I enumerate and discuss the determinants for applying internet texts to the teaching of specialist languages. Finally, I indicate new areas of research into the glottodidactic potential of IST, taking into account the multimodal dimension.

    Remarks about the use of the term “multimodality”

    The paper presents some remarks about the use of the term “multimodality” in recent linguistic discourse pointing at its development in various scientific disciplines. It attempts also to describe the research field of multimodal studies in scientific linguistic discourse at the present time.

    Multimodal Messages

    The term ‘multimodality’ can be ascribed a range of meanings. The author focuses on the way it is used in linguistics – in text linguistics and computer-mediated communication in particular. In the article, an outline of current scientific discussion on ‘multimodality’ along with the author’s own definition of the term are presented. According to the author, multimodality incorporates a wealth of semiotic elements of a given message on the one hand, and the process of directing the message in the reception process to various senses on the other.
