    IMPLICATIONS OF MULT-SENSORY APPROACH FOR CHILD L2 VOCABULARY ACQUISITION

    Teaching a foreign language to young learners requires of the teacher a special ability to involve them in a variety of activities explicitly accommodating their need for whole-person enjoyment and implicitly fostering their L2 knowledge. This complex pedagogic task is likely to be achieved with reliance on the multi-sensory approach which is recommended by the European Co-operation Programs as an alternative L2 teaching trend encompassing universal, proactive qualities and educational diversity. Consequently, the following paper highlights the multisensoiy approach as the driving force of the lexically oriented syllabus designed by the author for young children learning English as a foreign language. The said syllabus design is presented through the empirical filter of knowledge claims and value judgements about its efficiency.

    THE NATURE OF LINGUISTIC PROCESSES DETERMINING THE APPLICABILITY OF NOMINALIZATIONS APPLIED TO STRINGS NP-COP-AP

    The article aims at analyzing the principle which determines the acceptability and correctness of nominalizations performed upon sentences of the type: NP-Cop-AP. The discourse was initiated by Chomsky (1972), who demonstrated the fact that the correctness of TNOM>S established by processes taking place in SS, thus suggesting that the analysis of SS might shed light on the nature of the underlying DS processes. This view was lated supported by evidence coming from the analysis of the lexical features of NP and AP, carried out by Postal (1974). Thus discussion was initiated as to the role of 'the lexicalist hypothesis' and iexicalism' in sentence derivation. The author of the article discusses the validity of 'the lexicalist hypothesis', which maintains that lexical features alone can suffice for the explanation of the acceptability of TNOM applied to strings NP-Cop-AP. She claims that the resort to the lexical features needs to be made with respect to, as she calls them, elliptic structures, i. e. structures with shifted designations. In the search for the rule determining the correctness of TN0M, the author considers such principles as: Chomskean observation of its dependence upon the 'rough similarity' between SS and DS (Chomsky 1972), Postal's analysis of agentivity (Postal 1974), the role of the antecedent of the implied subject of the infinitive phrase (whenever it is contained in such structures) and, as she calls it, TNOM-over-TNOM principle. The analysis leads to the conclusion that the acceptability of TNOM CAN be assumed to be determined by the syntactic process. The author names it TNOM" over-TNOM constraint and analyzes it on the selected corpus of English and Polish sentences.

    ZUR ÜBERSETZUNGSÄQUIVALENZ DEUTSCHER UND POLNISCHER PHRASEOLOGISMEN MIT FARBBEZEICHNUNGEN

    The article is an attempt to lay down equivalents of German and Polish idiomatic phrases with colour names. The search for types of equivalence is founded upon three semantic levels of idioms as well as upon the principle of invariability in the process of translation. In this way the author tries to distinguish three types of equivalence: phraseological, lexical and zero equivalence which is prevalent in case of German and Polish phrases with colour names.

    PEUT-ON CONTRIBUER A L'EPANOUISSEMENT INTERCULTUREL DES APPRENANTS DE FLE A TRAVERS L'ORGANISATION DES ECHANGES SCOLAIRES?

    In this article, we would like to show that participation in school exchanges can contribute to the development of foreign language learners' intercultural competence. To begin with, we shall analyse challenges of intercultural education in a theoretical way. Secondly, we shall present our own research connected with a school exchange between Polish and French learners which was organised in 1999. In this presentation we shall emphasise the influence of the circumstances in which the exchange took place on the evolution of intercultural competence.

    ZUR HIERARCHISIERUNG DER WISSENSCHAFTLICHEN ASSERTIONEN MIT METATEXTUELLEN ÄUßERUNGEN

    The article presents the ways of ranking assertions or sequences of assercions in a scientific text, with the use of metatext explications. This ranking results from introducing into the text meta-phrases which explicitly or implicitly expresses the author's speech act. Speech acts signal on the one hand the assertions which are especially important, in opposition to the important ones, on the other, second-rate assertions opposing the primary ones. The article aims to present the analysis of the text creating function of hierarchical metaphrases and the ways of realizing them.

    Dialogic Signals In Argumentative Discussions of Advanced Polish Learners Of English

    The first part of the paper deals with characteristics of classroom interaction as a type of institutional talk in a conversational analytic perspective. Next, the thesis is discussed concerning developing learners' interactional competence to foster learner discursive independence in argumentative discussions in English as a foreign language. Finally, after a short review of dialogic signals, the article presents a preliminary analysis of selected dialogic signals: evaluating reformulations and piggybacking as the ways of achieving reciprocity in argumentative discussions.

    EXAMINATION OF HAUSA TERMS AND CONCEPTS USED OVER THE ELECTRONIC MEDIA IN THE EASTERN HAUSA DIALECT AREA

    The study is set up to examine Hausa terms and concepts used over the Nigeria electronic media. Specifically the study analyses the use of Hausa in the eastern Hausa dialect area where we sample Kaduna and Kano States in Nigeria. Through various instruments of research, the study comes up with various performances of the Hausa Broadcasters in terms of IOVs, IOAs, IOCs, and IOIs. The study identifies that there are various degrees of variations among Hausa Broadcasters in the use of terms and concepts in the electronic media in the eastern Hausa dialect area. These variations are observed at different levels i.e. among Hausa Broadcasters in the same electronic media within the same dialect area and across electronic media. These variations occasion various degrees of performances among Hausa Broadcasters in terms of IOAs. The study further identifies various degrees of performances in terms of IOCs, which result in various degrees of performances in terms of IOIs. The performances of the Hausa Broadcasters result in confusions and "breakdown of communication" as reported by Hausa listeners. These variations and inconsistencies in the use of Hausa terms and concepts over the electronic media are tied up to various factors. The lack of a language monitoring body saddled with the responsibility of supervising Hausa language development in the media may be the cause of such discrepancies in the use of terms of concepts over the electronic media in the eastern Hausa dialect area.

    ZUR ÜBERSETZUNG JURISTISCHER TERMINI IN DEUTSCHEN UND POLNISCHEN KLAGEANTRÄGEN

    The present paper aimed at suggesting Polish and German equivalents of legal terms used in the petitions of suits in both languages. First the methods of translating legal terms given in the literature were presented. According to them came the catalogue of the mentioned Polish and German legal terms with the argumentation for the choice of the suggested equivalents both in Polish and German. The assumed principle was, that in the case of two different legal systems, one should, if possible, avoid translating legal terms of the source language with the parallel legal terms of the target language. The discussed legal terms and their equivalents were juxtaposed in a table as a summary.

    ÄUßERUNGEN DEUTSCHLERNENDER OBERSCHÜLER ZUM INDUKTIVEN VORGEHEN IM GRAMMATIKUNTERRICHT

    The article presents the outcome of empirical research devoted to inductive teaching of foreign language grammar on secondary school level. The research was carried out according to qualitative methodology with use of open interview, which allowed depicting of the issues connected with "insightful", inductive teaching from the students' perspective. Students' opinions enabled an insight into their thinking processes and views concerning certain didactic steps and stages leading to generalisations (in this case grammatical rules). Students, first of all, voice their subjective opinions on the effectiveness of the inductive approach and its influence on further language learning. Student's utterances concern also occurring problems connected with, for example, teacher's authoritative attitude, inappropriate choice of texts, unequal level of advance in the group and also involve individual hardships - internal barriers - being a consequence of attachment to the expository teaching tradition in teaching languages.

    ERKLÄRUNGSSEQUENZEN IN KONSEKUTIV GEDOLMETSCHTEN GESPRÄCHEN

    The paper presents a trial to define a phenomenon, called explanatory sequences, which accompanies conversations that are interpreted consecutively. These sequences pertain to the process of interpretation and they are interactive language activities, undertaken not only by the interpreter but also by both interlocutors in a crisis situation, which poses a threat of misunderstanding the message to be conveyed. The explanatory sequences belong to the language activities which pertain to the process of communication and aim to: organize the process of text production, correct the communication and do away with doubts. These activities are undertaken by the participants of the conversation which is led in one language. What is however important for our investigation, are the explanations which have been caused by the process of interpretation and the presence of the interpreter who acts as a language in-between. Explanations in the process of translation can also serve to signal a change of the code by the speaker, who himself translates his text to the target language.
