The phase transitions and adhesion phenomena of adsorbed substances in silica and aluminosilica nanoporous matrices

Abstract

The confinement effect of the molecules in the porous nanospaces enjoys an considerable interest, both, from the cognitive point of view and from the applications as well. This is related to the fact that the nanoconfinement effect of substances leads to an appearance of many interesting properties, which are absent in the bulk state. As follows from the theoretical and experimental studies, the behaviour of the substances confined in the pores is determined by wall forces and the dimensionality of the system. It means that the physical properties of nanophases in the pores depend on: the size and shape of the pores, and also on the structural ordering and the type of porous wall. The pore size determines the value of the phase transition temperature shift relative to this temperature in the bulk form of a substance, while the type of the porous wall decides about the direction of this shift. An investigation of the wettability of the surface have the fundamental significance in the phase transitions of confined substances. Equally important seems to be the studies of an influence of the porous surface roughness on the adsorptive properties of the material, and on the phase transitions of the confined molecules in the pores. The main objective of this thesis was focused on an analysis of the wetting phenomenon in the synthesized silica and aluminosilica porous matrices and also on the determination of the relation between the substrate roughness, its wettability and the value of the melting point shift for the water and studied octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane (OMCTS).
