Interpreting universals and interpreting style
Abstract
Celem badań opisanych w niniejszej rozprawie jest wykazanie, czy cechy uniwersalne przekładu pisemnego tzn. symplifikacja, eksplicytność i normalizacja są tożsame z cechami uniwersalnymi tłumaczenia ustnego, czy też znacząco się różnią i do jakiego stopnia ich intensywność uzależniona jest od indywidualnych idiosynkratycznych preferencji stylistycznych tłumacza. W celu weryfikacji uniwersalności symplifikacji, eksplicytności i normalizacji w przypadku tłumaczeń ustnych przeprowadzono makroanalizę parametrów wskazujących na ich obecność na specjalnie skompilowanym korpusie tłumaczeń ustnych. Badanie na podkorpusach tłumaczeń ustnych z czterech różnych języków umożliwiło stwierdzenie, które z nich są niezależne od języka źródłowego, a które występują częściej, ale nie mają charakteru uniwersalnego. Najistotniejszym elementem mikroanalizy opartej na studium przypadku jest porównanie transkrypcji nagrań tłumaczeń wykonanych z różnych języków źródłowych przez dwóch tłumaczy i transkrypcji nagrań ich wypowiedzi. To badanie, z kolei, pozwoliło rozróżnić cechy będące elementami stylu tłumacza od cech uniwersalnych lub często obserwowanych w tłumaczeniu. Szczególną wartością niniejszej rozprawy jest innowacyjne połączenie badań nad cechami uniwersalnymi z analizą stylu indywidualnych tłumaczy oraz porównawcza analiza tłumaczeń z różnych języków źródłowych. Takie podejście pozwala określić, które z badanych cech mogą mieć charakter uniwersalny, które są jedynie częstym zjawiskiem, a które są w znacznym stopniu uzależnione od stylu tłumacza.
The aim of this dissertation is to examine whether translation universals i.e. simplification, explicitness and normalisation are also valid in interpreting and to what extent their prominence depends on idiosyncratic stylistic preferences of individual interpreters. To verify the universality of simplification, explicitness and normalisation in interpreting a microanalysis of a number of relevant parameters have been investigated on a specially compiled interpreting corpus. The analysis will help determine which of the features are universal, which are merely recurrent and which are strongly dependent on the stylistic preferences of an interpreter. The key element of the microanalysis, on the other hand, involves a case study comparing transcribed speeches and interpretations from different source languages delivered by two interpreters, which allows to distinguish idiosyncratic stylistic features from interpreting universals or the features frequently observed in interpreting. The most important value of this research lays in the innovative approach joining the investigations of interpreting universals with the one of interpreting style as well as the comparative analysis of interpretations from different source languages. Such an approach allows to determine which of the examined features are universal, which are merely recurrent and which are determined by idiosyncratic preferences.
