Interactive Culture

Abstract

Perspective is what sets the scene for my discussion of the concept of interactivity, which dominates the current thinking about contemporary culture. The notion of interactivity has come to be a universal catchword of new media and the information society alike. However, too broad an understanding of this category has obscured its relevance and usefulness in scholarly discourse. Hence the need to define the notion of interactivity more precisely as one of the most important theoretical problems of new media in the strict sense, and culture in the broad sense. In my deliberation I refer to the concept of remediation of culture (Jay David Bolter and Richard Grusin), construed as a process of mutual co-operation between the old and new media in an attempt to look at the phenomenon of interactivity in a broader perspective, taking into account the network of relations that determine its development. The idea of interactivity was born long before the advent of digital technologies, drawing on the then-emerging fields such as social psychology, cybernetics, and HCI issues (Katja Kwastek). Consequently, reflecting on interactivity involves social changes (Henry Jenkins) on the one hand, while touching the aesthetic issues of interactivity on the other - a common situation in the contemporary post-media. Thus, alongside considerations of a purely historical nature, discussing the phenomena and theories which have a direct or indirect impact on the formation of contemporary artistic practice in the area of cyber-culture, this paper attempts to describe activities either completely new or not yet fully recognized. The principle of interaction has changed the perception of contemporary art. Its shape has gone trough dramatic transformations in the face of a new communicative situation. Thus, a new set of questions emerges concerning both the form of work of art, one deprived of a material base, and the problem of the endless form subjected to continuous transformation.
