Karaite Beliefs and Practices Regarding Death: Tombstones and Rites of Polish-Lithuanian Karaites
Abstract
Niniejsza praca stanowi próbę spojrzenia na rolę jaką odgrywała śmierć (a szczególnie jej konsekwencje: pochówek, żałoba i nieczystość) dla karaimów polsko-litewskich. Wśród najważniejszych celów pracy należy wymienić: utworzenie kompendium wiedzy obejmujące wspomniane zagadnienia; porównanie karaimskiej doktryny (teorii) i obrzędowości (praktyki); zmniejszenie luki w znajomości karaimskiej epigrafiki nagrobnej poprzez przekład i opracowanie możliwie dużej ilości inskrypcji nagrobnych z cmentarza karaimskiego w Nowym Mieście. Rozdział I zawiera przekład fragmentów XVI-wiecznego kodeksu religijnego „Adderet Elijjahu”, które dotyczą żałoby, pogrzebu oraz skalania śmiercią (tum’at met). Przekład „Adderet Elijjahu”, tekstu uznawanego za autorytatywny przez polskich karaimów, jest punktem wyjścia do opisania karaimskich obrzędów w rozdziale II. Obrzędy zostały opisane głównie w formie, jaką przybrały w XIX i XX wieku. Rozdział III stanowi kompilację wiedzy na temat cmentarzy karaimskich – tak istniejących, jak i zniszczonych – które znajdowały się w obrębie państwa polsko litewskiego. Rozdział IV stanowi katalog macew z cmentarza karaimskiego w Nowym Mieście wraz z tłumaczeniem na język polski, edycją krytyczną i komentarzem.
This work is an attempt at providing a new perspective upon the role of death in the community of Polish-Lithuanian Karaites, in particular burial, mourning and impurity. The main aims of this work are as follows: to create a compendium of knowledge about the above subject matter; to compare the Karaite doctrine (theory) with the rituals (practice); to bridge the gap in the knowledge of Karaite tombstone epigraphy with the translation and edition of the highest possible number of tombstone inscriptions at the Karaite Cemetery in Nowe Miasto. Chapter one includes the said translation of excerpts from the 16th-century religious code Adderet Eliyyahu, which pertain to mourning, funeral and defilement from death (tum’at met). The translation of Adderet Eliyyahu, which is an authoritative text for the Polish Karaites, is the starting point for the description of the Karaite rituals in chapter two. The rituals are described in their 19th- and 20th-century form. Chapter three includes a compilation of data on Karaite cemeteries, those which exist to this day as well as the destroyed ones, all in the area which used to be the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. Chapter four is the catalogue of the matzevot from the Karaite cemetery in Nowe Miasto, with the Polish translation, critical edition and commentary.
